Stuck with two gamertags

I changed my gamertag about 3/4 hours ago and it all went fine then I looked at my profile on my Xbox One and I noticed it shows my old gamertag and then my new one under it and if anyone looks at my profile on their friends list, it shows my old gamertag
and not my new one, does anyone know why?

My friend just changed hers while we were playing and had absolutely 0 problems. I just want to remove the old gamertag from my profile so it can just be my new one, if anyone knows how to, that would be helpful

I know it wasn't taken because when I'm in game or when I look at my profile on the xbox website, it shows my new gamertag like it's supposed to and it doesn't have numbers after it like there would be if the gamertag was actually taken

edit: I changerd my gamertag via the Xbox website and not the Xbox One itself, I'm not sure if that has something to do with it or not

I understand that but what I don't understand is why it didn't happen to my friend when she changed her gamertag a few hours ago - is there anyway to remove said old gamertag because when I'm in an xbox one game such as red dead online, it shows my new
gamertag like it's supposed to

Hi Asyku,

After some research, it seems like your gamertag issue is an effect of the new gamertag system Microsoft implemented some time ago.

It means you now have a gamertag that will appear on Xbox and apps (your old gamertag) and an other one shown in games that doesn't support the new gamertag system. You can find more information about it here.

If you want to change it again, you'll probably have to pay the change as you already used your free change. When you're given the prompt to change it, you should see something similar to this.
The first line is what'll appear on certain apps, the second one in games that don't support the new system.

Thanks for reaching out to the Forums for advice on how to deal with this issue. I can totally understand how this could be pretty discouraging. I suggest

removing your account and then redownloading it from Xbox Live so in hopes that it will update properly.

When you get the chance, give that a shot and let us know if that helped.

Thanks for the input but it seems existing Microsoft account addresses cannot be added as aliases...

It means I am stuck with two Microsoft account, the one I use daily for emails, onedrive etc... (but with the gamertag I don't use)

and the other that I only use for the gamertag.

I wish that in the future it will be allowed to at least delete a gamertag that has no Gamerscore.

Everyone has run into this problem repeatedly while claiming an xbox original gamertag. The system shows the tag is available/being released but its stuck in that state. Those gamertags are stuck in limbo so to speak. The inactive spaced versions are blocking
the transition of those gamertags.
