    Stuck in "preparing console" / E106 loop


    I put a new SSD in, tried the OSU update and it didn't work. I tried a full reset, etc, and nothing worked. I put the old hdd in, and now that won't boot either.


    • I unenrolled from the insider program this morning (4-5 hours ago)


    • My console boots directly to "preparing console" which immediately fails (4-6%) and gives E106 error.


    • None of the options under "troubleshoot" work, I've tried multiple times on both harddrives.


    • Xbox One X (purchased 05/2020), OS Version: 19041.4788.amd64fre.vb_release_xbox_dev_2011.201111-0000

    My current thought/hope is to wait a few days/weeks for either the insider unenrollment to "go through" or for a new OSU that magically works.

    Any thoughts? I'm posting here because a Mod on the Microsoft forums suggested it.

    • Do you have any external storage units plugged into your console?

    • Did you select "Keep games and apps" or "Remove everything"?

    • How long has it been on the "preparing console" screen?

    Xbox won't start after update.

    "I have followed guides online and eventually attempted to restore from a USB stick by downloading OSU1. This starts to progress but at random % crashes with E106. Now I am stuck in a loop of E106 and the Xbox is now unusable."

    If you are connecting your console to your network hardware with wired ethernet cable, you must disconnect it prior to attempting an Offline System Update (OSU).

    If you are in an Insider preview ring, OSU's cannot be used unless you unenroll from the program. Unenrolling usually means a factory refresh will be applied.

    E102 is more than likely a hardware issue and you will need to setup a repair.
