Strict nat; port forwarding; Can I alternate ports for my xbox and my brother's?

For the last few years, we've had moderate to strict NAT with our zyxel nbg-418n router. Just the other night, I figured out how to port forward... And was able to set my Xbox'a NAT as Open. it worked to connect to my brother that night, but didn't work
last night. I've tried opening all the ports for each of out Xboxes, but it says that our router doesn't have enough memory for all those rules.

If I were to alternate the ports needed for xbox live between my brother'a xbox and my xbox, would that work just as well? If not, is there any easy way around this - like a setting or two I could try, or maybe a router that would accept a lot more port
forwarding rules that you would recommend?

    thanks much in advance

    :)

  3. Strict NAT

I never had to forward ports for my 360.. cleared all port forwarding settings. Disabled dmz. Still have strict NAT. Results of the test, status code 0x4000200004C, detailed nat info says "Your network is behind a port-preserving port-symmetric NAT".. appreciate
    the help

Strict nat; port forwarding; Can I alternate ports for my xbox and my brother's?

Update: I went ahead and ordered this combo: Motorola Surfboard SB6141 modem and Asus RT-N66U router. Various people on forums have suggested it for this issue, and just better overall quality , so I'm hoping this will solve it. It shouldn't be overkill
since I'm into computer science and need to play around with advanced networking features anyway. If for some reason this setup shouldn't work for port forwarding for two xbox ones and just with comcast in general, please post to let me know... But, as I said
earlier, the research I've done since asking this question seems to point towards this setup working for my needs.

Hi Klepto! To answer your question, yes, the combo you've purchased sounds like it will work perfectly for the advanced networking settings (port forwarding) with your Xbox Ones. In addition to forwarding the full set of Xbox One ports, keep in mind that
with multiple Xboxes attached to the same network, you will need to turn on something called "UPnP" which is Universal Plug and Play. It allows multiple devices which would normally compete for the open ports to be able to connect properly.

Lastly, I've noticed on my Xbox that, even though the ports are forwarded and my NAT is Open, occasionally on startup my settings will have reverted to Strict (even though I haven't changed anything with my port forwarding.) Whether this is due to a wireless
device or a program on my computer using the same port and blocking the Xbox from accessing it, or even from a recent update, I'm not sure, but a hard restart ALWAYS fixes this problem for me!

    Hope this helps!

If you are using multiple xboxes on the same network (like 2 xboxes in one house), it is extremely difficult to get past the moderate and strict NAT garbage. Most suggest port "triggering" over port "forwarding" since forwarding usually is only helpful
for a single xbox getting the NAT problems. I have tried port triggering in the past and had only slight success with it. It usually never ends up in an Open NAT. DMZ is another option if your router/modem can handle it. I hope your setup works.

Here's a link that might help a bit if you haven't already seen it.

Thanks to both of you. I don't have high hopes of my cheapo Zyxel router allowing port triggering and all that reliably, but I will look into it when I get home.

Jaymo, I will certainly try doing a hard reset if the situation arises again. It only seems to clear the cache, so I don't think I'll lose any important stuff in the process... No reason not to Strict nat; port forwarding; Can I alternate ports for my xbox and my brother's? :)

Thanks again guys. Hopefully I won't need to do another update post, but I may just do one anyway for others in two or three days if my setup works out
