  1. Strict Nat on Xbox 360 (new issue)

Hello everyone! Until recently I have never had any issues with my NAT on my 360, even after I got an Xbox One.

After I had a friend over who hooked up his 360 for the weekend I have been having issues with my NAT becoming strict. After talking to Microsoft support and an evening of tinkering I finally forwarded all the ports they told me to, namely ports 88, 53,
3074, 80, 500, 3544 and 4500. After having done all that everything went back to well and fine and I was able to connect to Xbox live parties once again. Now the issue has come back with a vengeance and I cannot get it fixed. I have restarted my Xbox and
router and modem. My router is a net-gear r6250. It does support UPnP but having it off or on didn't help either way.

Any help would be immensely appreciated!

    :)

    Port forwarding question

I have discovered why my X1 reports a Strict or Moderate NAT sometimes and it's after one of the 360s uses one of the ports the X1 needs. As soon as a Live port is used for a 360 via UPnP, 3074 for example, the X1 drops to Strict.

This is exactly the reason why I use UPnP, because if 360 1 is using 3074, UPnP will map 360 2 to a different port number that grants the same access as 3074 allowing both to communicate with the Live service at the same time, thus granting an Open NAT to all connected 360s. The X1 is not triggering port forwarding via UPnP to utilise this feature, so is the device that suffers when a 360 is in use.

The PS3 used to have a UPnP enable/disable option on the console itself, which I thought was odd, but perhaps if the 360 had this, enabling it would tell the console to use UPnP, which once it uses UPnP to trigger the ports I'm sure it will resolve the multiple device issue.

    For reference:

    • When I have an Open NAT, the X1's Detailed NAT Information says: Your network is behind a cone NAT
    • When I have a Moderate NAT, the X1's Detailed NAT Information says: Your network is behind a port-restricted NAT
    • When I have a Strict NAT, the X1's Detailed NAT Information says: Your network is behind a port-preserving port-symmetric NAT

Anyone else's nat say strict at the moment? It always usually says open but I'm wondering if it's just saying strict caus of the issues they are having.

On a side not Xbox live has been a shitshow lately, something's always wrong.....

    Hey there NightElfMohavvk!

Sorry to hear about the connection issues.

Could you answer the following questions? This will help both me and the community to provide better support for your issue.

What Country/State/Province do you live in?

    Modem brand & model number:

    Router brand & model number:

How many consoles do you have connected to this router?

Wired or wireless (for each console):

If Wireless, are you using a white or black external adapter, or an internal (Xbox 360S) adapter?

    Things you have tried:

    Is UPnP Enabled? Yes/no/Unknown

Do you have a NAT error? If so, what is your NAT type?

    Any Error Codes you encounter:

Who is your ISP(Internet Service Provider)?

After you run "Test Xbox LIVE connection" press “Y” for "More Info”. In the pop-up that appears, what are the following values, if shown? (If a value below does not appear for you, just leave it blank.)

First of all you shouldn't use port forwarding if you have both an xbox one and 360 as they both require port 3074. This may cause NAT issues in one of the consoles.

Also you said it only happened after your friend brought his 360 over.

This suggests that your router may not have multi console support.

To get consistantly open NATs if you own multiple xboxes you need a router with confirmed multi-console support. Most routers don't

You also need to use UPnP exclusively. Port forwarding or DMZ will cause mapping conflicts which will give you moderate or strict NATS in the other consoles.

I have checked the network hardware forums for your router. While your model isn't listed I found the one with the nearest model number and that does not have multi console support

    forums.xbox.com/.../489559.aspx

Unfortunately if your router does not have multi-console support then your only option is to buy a new router that does.

Troubleshooting VPN passthrough for Home Routers

    Overview:

VPN is a way to connect two secure networks over the Internet — for example a home network and one in a business. It needs special equipment or software at both ends.

The term "VPN passthrough" on routers means that the equipment does NOT support one of the endpoints, but only that it allows traffic from those endpoints to "pass through". All NETGEAR routers support VPN passthrough for IPSec, PPTP and L2TP. To create
one of these endpoints, see What is VPN? link.

This article applies if you were already connected with VPN, but installing a NETGEAR router stopped your VPN from working.

NETGEAR routers with VPN passthrough are intended to work without modification, however sometimes troubleshooting is necessary to localize a problem. If your router supports 0 VPN terminators, you need other equipment or software besides the router.

Current home routers that support VPN passthrough are DGN1000, and D6300,

Note these do not have VPN Wizard, and policies cannot be created on these.

The DGN2200v3, DGND3700v2 , D6200 and DGND4000 all support VPN wizard. Detail in User manual. For example, see link.

    Resolution:

Any of these steps may solve the problem:

If your equipment supports NAT-T (NAT Traversal), turn it on.

Contact your network administrator to understand details of how you need to configure your VPN software. (Common software is Cisco NAT-T and NETGEAR ProSafe).

If your company uses L2TP passthrough, register your router's MAC address with your company's system administrator.

Upgrade to the latest router firmware.

Enable port forwarding for the VPN port 500, ( for IPSec VPN's), port 1723 for PPTP VPN's, and port 1701 for L2tp- L2tp routing and remote access. Port 500 may be listed under the list of services. You can visit this link for more information on Port Forwarding:
How do I configure port forwarding on routers with the NETGEAR genie interface?

Note: Check if the WAN IP is Public or Private. Ports can be opened on Public IP addresses only.

By default the router's firewall is configured to drop (delete) ICMP packets sent from outside your network to the WAN port. Your VPN may require the ICMP packets. To accept them:

Log in to the router using a browser by typing
    http://192.168.0.1
    , Router login,
    Router login or
    http://192.168.1.1
    .

Type admin for the username and password for the password (unless you change the password from the default).

Select WAN Setup > Advanced > Respond to Ping on Internet Port.

    Click Apply.
