    Strict NAT limitations?

Hello, I've been playing with a Strict NAT for most of my time on Xbox Live. I manually port-forwarded the Open (or sometimes Moderate) connection to a sibling's console so they can play better, so this Strict NAT is something I have to deal with in our
household (it's unusual, but it seems to work lol). So only one console in the house can have the Open/Moderate connection at a time. On the 360, it was easy to work around and it barely affected my experience online.

However, I'm encountering a ton of issues with my Xbox Live service on the Xbox One specifically, and I was wondering if these are caused by a Strict NAT? (I'd also like to mention that the signal reaching my console is strong and fairly stable most of the
    time):

    - Friends list is "Unavailable" 3/4 of the time, or my friends all show up as Offline in the Friends List menu (even when it says some are online on the dashboard). Interacting with them is difficult when this happens.

    - Achievements are "Unavailable" 3/4 of the time.

    - I have to reset my console 1-5 times, or unplug my mic at least 3-8 times to hear anyone when I join a party (the host's NAT doesn't seem to make a difference for me).

    - 3/4 of the time when I accept game or party invites, the console will not even attempt to load them, so nothing happens. This happens when accepting invites via both the controller and the Dashboard.

    - Joining multiplayer lobbies is difficult with my friends, even when I can connect to them fine in parties on both the 360 and the One; I can also join their multiplayer lobbies on the 360 with no problems.

    - The Xbox One will tell me I lost my internet connection, when I'm still in parties talking to people. It will also tell me I'm offline and online at the same time in different menus.

There's more... but these are probably the most reoccurring problems. I have to fight for sometimes up to 30 minutes even just to speak with my friends on the Xbox One console.... when it'll take me 30 seconds on the 360. So are these problems with having
a Strict NAT? Or is my Xbox One just broken? .__. I don't think it's fair that my Xbox Live service should deteriorate THAT much from having a Strict NAT, especially when we pay $60 a year for it, not to mention when we spend on the consoles themselves.

I've already tried reading through the Support pages, but I'm still not sure, since there's so many different types of problems. I know that having the Strict NAT means more connectivity issues and I read a bit about it already, but yes. I'm having none
of these problems on my 360 and I can connect to peoples' parties and games a lot easier there than on the new system.

Thank you very much, any help or explanations are appreciated. Strict NAT limitations? :)

    :)

    Can't find wireless network

    Wired connection seems to work.

NAT is showing as 'strict'. Wonder why the wireless is playing up.

Xbox One NAT type: Strict.... Help

If it's still strict after you open the proper ports, try resetting your modem and router, then hard reset your console.

This site will help you open the right ports
    Open Port

Just select your router and follow the instructions. Do not download anything from the site, it's not necessary. It's a safe site, but port forwarding manually is very easy.

    Strict NAT limitations?

    Hey there Kestrel237!

Sorry to hear about the NAT issue. Having a Strict NAT can definitely impact everything you have mentioned you're having issues with. Could you provide the brand and model numbers of both your router and your modem? That information will help us narrow down
    the issue!

Post back with the info we need and we will do our best to help you get this issue sorted! Strict NAT limitations? :)

Hopefully this should help, both our modem and router are about 5 and a half years old by now, haha (but they still work fine and the signal's strong).

    Modem: "Motorola" SB5102 Cable Modem

    Router: "Cisco" Linksys, model #: WRT160N V3

In our settings, my sibling's xbox's ports are forwarded to their 360. They have an Open or Moderate NAT most of the time. Forwarding ports to both our xboxes at the same time never seemed to work. I still have yet to learn how to find my Xbox One's IP address,
lol Strict NAT limitations? :p Thanks again!

Alright, so it looks like your router does not support multiple Xbox consoles on the same network. It looks like the router is prioritizing the ports to the Xbox 360 console, which explains the NAT issue you are having with your Xbox One console. You can
refer to our Linksys WRT160N post for more information on your router. Once thing you definitely can try is enabling
UPnP on your router, but I cannot guarantee that will work.

Best solution is to replace your current router with one that can support multiple consoles. I suggest browsing our list of Routers we have tested for ideas!

Thanks! I enabled UPnP, and I'll try that out for a while. If not, then yeah I probably will have to choose a new one pretty soon here! Strict NAT limitations? :p

Oh, one last quick question though, for my sibling's 360 console, I have two ports forwarded to it to have it Open:

External/Internal Port 88 with UDP protocol

    External/Intenral Port 3074 with Both TCP/UDP protocol

^ Does this sound correct to you? Maybe I could try opening these ports to my Xbox One's IP address?

Thanks again though, and the selection of routers will really help with narrowing down a new ideal model (I'm not very tech savvy lol)

    Hey there Kestrel237!

Enabling UPnP will be replacing the need to open those ports. Since you have more than one console, UPnP is the best route to take. Post back and let us know if UPnP helps, but still keep looking at some routers too! Strict NAT limitations? :)

I can confidently say, my Linksys WRVS4400n is a BEAST and I love it, it works great. It's on the list Mister Beep posted. High security, very configurable, and I have never had a problem with it. It's a bit pricey if you get one through main retailers ($200-$300)
but I know there are some sites out there with a price below $100.

Ohh, right! Okay, I'll post back here by the weekend at the latest, when I can test out my Xbox One. Strict NAT limitations? :) If it's still being particularly "quirky", then yes, I'll probably start looking for a new router within the next little while.

And thanks Jaymo, I wrote that one down for future reference! I was planning to stay with Linksys anyways; we've never had a problem with ours, and it's almost 6 years old.

I tested out my Xbox One after enabling UPnP, and it said my NAT was Open, at least after the first time I turned it on (I'm happy even with a Moderate NAT). I could actually see my friend's list too this time, golly! xD It's definitely improved from what
I've seen so far. I have yet to figure out how my sibling's 360 console's NAT has been affected, but that's something I can work around with myself.

All right! I'll stick with these settings on my router for now, but someday pretty soon I'll go out looking for a new one. Thank you guys for the helpful links and suggestions, and for your patience!

i bought a linksys ac1600 wireless router and had the same issue. took the linksys back to bestbuy and got a netgear and have had no issues. linksys apparently is still stuck in the past instead of catching up to the future

Awesome to hear, Kestrel237! Be sure to keep in mind that if your siblings Xbox 360 starts having issues connecting, it's probably a result of some of the issues with your router we discussed. Have fun and happy gaming! Strict NAT limitations? :)
