  1. Strict NAT after many different fix attempts

    Hey,

I just got an Xbox One about three weeks ago.

I haven't been able to get an OPEN Nat type and its really getting to me. Can't play BF4 without major lag.

    Heres the run down.

My internet is provided by a university and they said they are completely open on their side which means its down to me, the router, and the One.

I have a Cisco Linksys E1200 router. I've tried single port forwarding, port forwarding in a range, I gave the One a static IP and threw that in the DMZ with the wireless MAC address, and everything so far has failed. I can sometimes get it to say Open or
    moderate but never for long.

The only other devices we have are to MacBooks and two iPhones.

I've tried everything on that list as least once and many I've tried several times.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    :)

Dedicated servers? Then why the lag and connection advantages?

Things like crappy hardware and strict NAT types are a person's own problem. Server can't fix a shit connection.

  3. Odd NAT settings, still set to strict after many attempts.

I think it's important to say that I've tried everything listed on this website regarding opening my NAT.

    I'm using a Bigpond Thomson TG782T.

I have tried the following -

-Forwarding the correct ports to my router/xbox's static IP (seperately

-Tested UPnP with different settings, only worked at the very beginning, even then I couldn't connect to some players.

-Forwarded the ports to the router itself so as to open NAT for the network, theoretically.

-Connecting via an Ethernet cable, which yielded no better results.

Currently, I have the correct ports forwarded to my Xbox, with UPnP on, merely to make it so I can connect on my PC.

The things that really should have caused it to work fine, as I would have guessed it is simply forwarding the ports to the router. However, each of the above methods that I've tried have resulted in a strict NAT setting, according to the Xbox network test.

What I'd like to do is forward these ports over the network, so I don't have to worry about NAT settings on my computer.

Strict NAT after many different fix attempts

I know that they say they are completely open but...

Here's a question: Is your external IP your own or is it shared by other people? If you have a shared IP, you're still behind a NAT, regardless of what your university will tell you.

Is there someone like a neighbor who you can check with to see if they are getting different IPs?

    I would do this:

    • Go to Google.com
    • Search for "What is my IP"
    • Compare your results to a neighbors. If it's the same, you're behind the University's NAT, and will be subject to whatever network policies they have in place.

    Greetings!

I assume your university's network has a set of public IP addresses that can be addressed to the Internet-at-large. Behind the WAN interface, are the local interface, facing the internal, or private side of the university network. These addresses can be
used to share multiple host machines with IP addresses that are not routable on the Internet.

Access the web utility interface of your router and make sure the WAN, or Internet IP address are not an address within the private range. If it is, then you are behind multiple layers of NAT.

Let me know what you are able to find out.

I spoke to a not so nice network specialist from the university who assured me that everything on their side is open but you may have a point as I ran some more tests and even with the xbox just plugged into the ethernet its saying strict. My download and
upload times doubled and so far I have seen a reduction in lag though I can't keep it this way because I need to run multiple devices off the wifi.

Whats the next step then? I'd rather not call the network woman again because I'm pretty sure she'd bite my head off. I'll try and check with a neighbor about the IP address I only know one of them well enough to ask and I don't know when she'll be around.

    In regard to taidara:

I have to admit your advice is over my head, I did some digging around on my router and on the basic setup page there is has a range under the DHCP server setting header, is that the "private range" that I shouldn't be in?

The static IP have a set on my One is currently within that range.

Odd NAT settings, still set to strict after many attempts.

You need to turn off either Port Forwarding or uPnP. You can not have Port Forwarding, uPnP or DMZ turned on at the same time. If you do you will only cause more problems than resolutions. Pick ONE of those and disable the rest.

Since you prefer Port Forwarding select that and disable the uPnP. You don't need uPnP enabled for your PC to function properly. I have used PF for several years now on my network and have no issues using my 2 laptops or desktop PC.

Be sure that once you change and save the router settings that you power it down for a few seconds (5-10) and then boot it back up again. Do the same thing with your console, power it down and then power it back up. (Just like with Windows OS anytime
you install or change something you pretty much have to restart the PC in order for the changes to take affect).

    Error Code: X7053-1803 (Netflix App)

Check to see if your NAT is strict.

I had this earlier, but also had a strict NAT, only way I could get it off strict was to DMZ my Xbox One IP address on my router, UPNP is enabled but bugger knows why it wasn't doing its job.

After DMZ'ing I done a full reboot of the Xbox One (tried the before doing the former, made no difference to the NAT) the NAT was Open again & I tried Netflix & it worked.

If this is indeed the case & netflix doesn't work under a strict NAT setting, then at least we can let MS know.
