    Power supply plugged into surge protector

    I agree with Joe Mamma. I have my XB1 into a surge protector (Not a Monster, but an APC, which costs ~55) with no issues. I don't have a lot of electronics plugged into the surge protector. IF you have a lot of power-hungry electronics on one protector,
    the XB1 won't have enough power, which would cause the strange noises, and power the console off.

    Yes, I'd also like to know where the sound is coming from.

    That sounds extremely odd if itself is coming from the Xbox itself. Try and track the noise to see exactly where it's coming from.

    Update:

    It seems to be less frequent when warmed up, but still pretty bad when in stand by mode. Hard resetting it does nothing, I'm guess with the lack of help here is that the only option is replacement. Bummer as that's going to be a bit of a wait.
