Strange disk drive activity

Hi,

Until recently I've always played my Xbox One with headphones on so I don't know if this is a new thing or if its always happened. I now paly with headphones off so can hear any noise my console makes. Whenever I put a new game in the DVD drive, about 30
seconds to a minute later I can hear a succession of regular evenly spaced drive reads lasting about ten seconds, then nothing from the drive until I change to another disk when the same thing will happen, again approximately 30 seconds to a minute later.
This seems to happen with all games, and will happen regardless of whether or not the game is actually running at the time (I've tested by quitting the game from the guide button as soon as it starts and the disk reads will still occur within the 30 secs to
1 min timeframe). It does not seem to cause a problem with gameplay and I never get any error messages or codes displayed by the operating system.

Is this normal and just part of disk verification, or is there something wrong with my console?

Disk installtions being ignored

When a game is installed, the disk is still required. Installs are supposed to "lessen" the disk activity, but the disks will still be accessed, like checking that the disk is matching the installation data (DRM checks).

Unreadable errors relate to the disk or disk drive I would assume. You've already tried some things, check and make sure the disk is clean and open the drive tray up and make sure that is clean as well.

 

Install or no install?

So I've had my xbox for about 5 years now and I always install my games to my HDD since my disk drive makes strange noises. But I'm hearing that it causes negative effects on the performance of the game. Will this game destroy my disk drive if I don't
install the game?

Same here, and it's not just you guys - others have also mentioned this happening. The odd thing is, like you said, it doesn't affect the gameplay or system behavior, but it makes me nervous about what the potential long-term wear and tear may be on the
drive when it does this....

 

No ones quick to reply or update us of any problem to the disc drive i am guessing you maybe right i might be a disk verifaction thing that maybe they dont want us to know about only time will tell one things for sure its definitly was ok before this update

 

Thanks for all the replies. At least it seems that it's not something inherently wrong with my console, although I share Jaymo's concerns about the possibility for wear and tear in the future. I see you both have hefty gamer scores so I expect you probably
use your consoles as much as I do. I regularly change my disks about 2 or 3 times a night so hopefully any degradation will show up before the warranty expires .... I really wish I'd taken out that extended warranty now. God knows why I didn't given the experiences
I had with the early 360s.
