Storing Games on 1TB Thumb Drive

I'm trying to store games on a 1tb thumb drive from my Xbox One X. The Xbox will not recognize the thumb drive as anything except a media storage for music, photos and video. It wont let me copy games over to it.

I'm trying to do this so my friend can play the new COD when I visit his house (he has a low data cap on house internet) since it's like 130GB to simply be able to play it. I own it digitally so I dont have a disk to take and I cant just download it after
signing in at his house because of his data cap.

I'm kinda at my witts end with this. I KNOW you used to be able to do this... why is it no longer a feature?

    PLEASE HELP!

    :)

Storing Games on 1TB Thumb Drive

    Hi

The use of external memory for games is still a feature. You might have to check if the specific device you are using is up to the specifications the console can read.

I once had an issue where the console stopped detecting the external HDD because it didn't eject properly; in that case, my PC would be able to recognize the device although couldn't read it. So perhaps you should try following the
steps here to test the console is detecting correctly the device. https://beta.support.xbox.com/help/hardware-network/storage/console-doesnt-detect-external-storage

and this one is for how to set it up:

    Hope this helps

No its definately a feature still but you do realize that legit thumbdrives that are 1tb are more then ssd or regular external drives and ontop of that would deterioite fast

Thumbdrives arent meant for.constant reading and writing which consoles do

If you bought a cheap thumbdrive like under 150 id return it cause its most likely fake

What you are suggesting wont work

You need to download the game using HIS Console and make his console home console as it does and is HUGE and is has constant updates which are fairly large

Whenever he is at your hiuse he can do this

You would have to.format the usb drive first using his console

Digital downloads ONLY work on the console.they were downloaded on

While you were probably right about the storage device being fake, but you are
wrong about the downloads. Digital downloads will work on any console as long as either the owner of the content signs in with their account or the console being used is HOME console of the user who owns the downloads.

I'm not a big console user anymore, but when I upgraded from the Xbox One to the One X I simply plugged in my external drive I had been using on my older console into my new One X. All the downloads worked, I didn't have to download them again.

    Hi,

What exactly is this 'thumb drive' you are trying to use here. Is it a USB Flash drive? From where did you buy the drive and how much did you pay for said storage device?

If it was less then $100, you've been had and you don't have a 1 TB Flash drive. A legitimate 1 TB Flash drive will be anything from $100 to $200 depending on its rated read/write speeds over USB 3.

Yes, plug such a fake storage device into a PC and it may well tell you it's 1 TB, but its a lie. In fake storage device manufacturer simply modify the controller chip to report whatever capacity they want it to be, but won't be that capacity though.

    Hi xXxJoEkRxXx,

You might need to format your thumb drive then try to copy the game. For an external storage drive to save games and apps from Xbox One, it must meet the following requirements:

    • It uses a USB 3.0 connection. If you’re using a USB hub, the hub must also be USB 3.0 or later.
    • It has 128 GB or larger storage capacity.
    • It has a partition. Typically, drives come with a preformatted partition. For more info about partitioning an external hard drive, refer to the manufacturer’s instructions.
    • No more than three storage devices are connected to the console at the same time.

Devices that don’t meet these requirements will be treated as media storage, such as for music or video.

You can find more info here on how to format, setup external storage and troubleshooting.
