  1. Storage (VHD)

    Hi,

I have 2 issues in need of resolving:

    1:

I found a very useful video in which it shows me how to create a virtual hard drive (VHD) and I was really excited and happy because it allowed me to have 1 TB of storage. I changed the settings so that everything is now saved onto the newly created VHD. After having a moment of happiness, I went onto Xbox and wanted to download some of the games I wanted to play for a while, I changed the location of where the downloaded content should be saved, from my C drive to the VHD. Everything was going well until I hit an error. I do not remember the exact error code. It did ask me to restart my computer, so I did the 30 second reboot (where the user presses the power button for 30 seconds) and was hopping everything would be resolved. It did not. Next, I did a lot of research. One website says that I have to create a text folder or something of the sort. I couldn't find where to create one, so I decided to look for something else. My question is: how do I permanently mount a VHD onto my computer so that whenever I log out and sign into my computer, the VHD is still available.

    2:

Relating to the previous issue, I am wondering if there is way to fix an issue where space on my C drive keeps being filled up even though I do not have anything being downloaded.

If there needs to be any clarification, please do not hesitate to ask.

    :)

What you're doing is not supported, and cannot offer the performance games are expecting

You need to use an external SSD cartridge on Series consoles and/or a USB 3.0 external hard drive physically connected to the system.

You cannot stream game data from any other kind of external devices

Your C drive is likely being filled with temporary files based on your computing. I'm guessing you're riding close to the line. You also may have failed game downloads, which you can see in the manage section of the xbox app.

I suggest buying larger hard drives, and failing that, reinstalling windows, sounds like cleaning house is your best bet to free up space

I'm going to be honest: I'm a little hesitant to share the error code because if I do, most of the games I want to play require between 30 - 133 GBs of space and I do not want to go through an issue I had and do another factory reset.

I figured as much when I deleted some pretty large files and the storage was still being filled. I decided to do a factory reset earlier this morning (Pacific Central Time) and everything seems normal.

    Hello Alaka'i Hennings,

Thank you for reaching out to us about your issue!

    1. Can you relay the error code that you were receiving? We're not experienced with the installation of games on virtual hard disks specifically. If you're able to find out anything, please let us know so we can share it with the community.

    2. You can view your storage and see specifically what's taking up space by following the steps below:

    • Go to your Settings
    • Select System
    • Open your Storage
There you will be able to see and delete any temporary files, apps, and data that you no longer need.

Hopefully this helps and we're looking forward to hearing back,

    XBF Dom

Greetings! Thank you for posting in Xbox Forums. We are happy to help.

Before we can answer your question, we would like to know more details on how your VHD was set up. Let us find out the reason why and what is happening with your VHD and direct you over to the right path if necessary.

Based on your description, this issue triggers with restart or sleep of laptop. In connection to that we will ask for details:

Are you creating VHD for another device?

Is the VHD on an external hard drive where we're storing the game?
