Stop my Xbox from downloading games and update automatically

I have 2 Xbox Ones. I have to figure out how to stop them from updating games automatically. It's killing my data cap each month. I'd prefer to not have to uninstall the game just so it'll quit updating. Lots of the games are already installed but rarely
played and I'm fine with having to update manually if/when the game is played.

I'd also like to be able to have new digital purchased go into my AVAILABLE games rather than just start downloading to the console but it's been years that people have been asking for this and it hasn't been added as an option. The updates are killing
me though.

No downloads in Instant On Mode

I'm having the same issue. Downloads stop when the console is turned off even though both instant on mode and download updates automatically are selected. Also, I recently purchased a game from the web and it did not automatically download. I had to manually
download it on the console.

 

Downloads are not moving to the "Pending Download" list.

@Table: That is not correct. The console is capable of downloading in the background. The only time is should stop is when you start playing a multiplayer game. When you do play a multiplayer game, the download should still appear as "Pending" and then automatically
re-start whenever you stop playing the game.

@Fuzzy: I don't know for certain the solution to your issue, but you might try downloading the dashboard updates to a USB from the website and applying it that way instead of downloading it directly to the XBox.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention, you should be able to turn off your Game and Apps automatic updates off.

On the Xbox One Console go ahead and go into your:

• Settings
• Click on System
• Click on Updates

Under Latest console update status, you will see the Games & apps box, here go ahead and uncheck the box labeled "Keep my games & apps up to date.

So what you would need to do to stop the automatic downloads to your console is switch your power mode to energy saving here is a support article telling you how to do that.

This will make your console start up take a little longer but it will prevent your game updates from downloading while the console is off.

Think of it this way when:

In instant on mode its like putting a computer to sleep when you turn it back on it just starts up from where you were previously.

In energy saving mode it is like turning your computer completely off and has to go through a full reboot everytime you start it up.
