Static or Dynamic?

Hey,

So I have toyed around with for a while and have never pulled the trigger. I recently bought the series S console and now I wonder if it is time.

What is better for gaming, a static ip or a dynamic ip?

So I typically have my Xbox wired at my house but every other week I go to a friends house and play online there, I am wired there as well. Halo Infinite is the not game I am currently playing.

After getting halo infinite downloaded, I checked my network stats and NAT and it was not good. My Xbox one had been set to the DMZ and I never had any issues wired. Wireless was not an option as the issues my NAT would be strict and network stats would be bad as well like latency.

So what is better for this situation? From my understanding a static ip means I will always get assigned the same ip regardless of wired or wireless. Not sure what will happen when I go to my friends though. At his place there are 3 Xboxes connecting and we never have any issues.

I know enough about networking to make me dangerous. Some guidance would be appreciated.

You see, that's a good question indeed. When it comes to gaming, I do believe a static IP address is preferred for a dedicated internet connection that isn't interrupted nor influenced by other user's online activities. Since online gaming is a rejoice and competitive, in most of the times, activity, the last thing you want is to experience network issues commonly faced by Dynamic IP users.

So, in your case, I would suggest using a static IP.

The IP address is at the router level so the IP address will change at your friend's house as it is a different router.

Some ISPs will charge extra for a Dynamic IP address (mine does)

Either way, the Ip address is just like a web URL for a shop such as Amazon...it's just an identifier rather than affecting connectivity and such

Dynamic host configuration protocol. There are 2 different kinds if internet protocol ,or IP addresses, which are static and dynamic. Static IP is set by your ISP to your specific modem. Dynamic IP is set up at random. Once your service is activated your
modem sends a request to the DHCP to assign it an IP address. Releasing the DHCP should reset your IP. Sometimes with dynamic IP addresses it will change at random anyway.
