    Standard Blu-ray not being up-converted


    When playing a UHD Blu-ray, I get 4K resolution. Netflix is in 4K. When I play a game or any other app, the output to my TV is still in 4K (so the Xbox is up-converting). However when I play a standard Blu-ray, the output resolution changes to 1080p.

    Do we have any proof of that or is that just your theory? I just picked up my xbox yesterday and others are reporting on this site and even on youtube that their standard blu rays were being up scaled. It seemed upscaled before a recent patch to the player
    app. In the discription it says no where that it can't upscale but says it will upscale "everything".

    4K upscaling

    "When you set your console resolution to 4K UHD, everything on the console—Home, games, and apps—will display at 4K. 4K content is displayed in its native 4K resolution, and other content (like 1080p content) is upscaled to 4K."

    If my blu rays can not be up scaled, (if it makes a difference or not) then I was mislead by Microsoft.

    "Ultra HD" Blu-Rays will play in 4K. Standard Blu-Rays will play in 1080p.

    The Xbox One S will only output to the highest resolution offered by the Blu-Ray disc it plays.

    I suppose this design choice was in mind because 4K/UHD-TVs already process and upscale a lower resolution image to "cleanly" use all of the 3840x2160 pixels, so it's not putting unnecessary load on the Xbox One S CPU.

    Hey, drwatson618! Sorry to see any confusion surrounding this, however some items that are not 4K rated will not display in 4K. This is why the console needs to be set to Auto in the settings; not everything supports 4K just yet, and the console wants to
    adjust for those items.

    Dolby Vision for UHD Movies

    I wouldn't hold your breath. Dolby Vision is a proprietary HDR format needing manufacturers and producers to pay licensing fees whereas HDR10 and HDR10+ are open standards. With Blu Ray sales dwindling in comparison to the movie market share being snapped
    up by streaming giants, I can't see MS making the investment in getting the blu ray player app licensed.

    No Blu-Ray is a different disc reading to the standard DVD basis. Many companys have the legal right of using it like Sony. But Microsoft isn't one of them so I'm sorry it won't play Blu-Ray DVDs. They require a Blu-Ray Disc Driver.
