SSD or magnetic drive for xbox games on PC

I’m wanting to move my xbox games from my PC to external drive. Does it need to be a SSD to perform well for games like battlefront or can I use a regular magnetic platter drive that I have lying around?

    :)

you get streaming warnings on forza horizon 5 on pc when running on a hdd, to eliminate this you just reduce textures slightly. but starfield is a bethesda game, it is gonna need a super computer to tun on on launch as they never optimise their games properly and it is usually the mod scene on pc that fixes those issues.

loading times don't really bother me as i have patience and i also grew up with tape loading amstrads in the early 80's lol. (some games took 30 minutes or more to load, then crash and go though loading again)
It was a Commodore 64 for me. I think only one of my friends had a CPC464, the rest was a mix up of C64's and ZX Spectrums!

Newer games are now asking for SSD's and this trend will continue from here on. However, like others have said you don't need them for all games still, most older games will work fine an old 'spinning rust' drive. I've got many of my old classic PC games on my HDD.

Modern games benefit massively from SSD's though. Even an external SATA SSD connected by USB 3 is far superior than any mechanical drive. On a game like Assassins Creed Origins, fast traveling from one side of the map to the other on a mechanical drive takes up to 40 seconds, on an SSD it's about 5 seconds!

I couldn't imagine how poorly a game like Starfield would run on a mechanical drive. Games like these stream in data constantly, not just loading when you transition different areas. A slow drive on something like Starfield would cause delayed texture loading, pop in, pausing and stuttering. That's why the system requirements state an SSD for that game.

lol, when gaming was challenging, or spending 5 hours typing in a huge amount of code from a book to finally save to tape and load to find an error haha.

Thanks everyone for the quick replies! If it were me, I probably won't care so much about loading times but these are my kids PCs so i'll likely just for with SSDs. Much appreciated!
