my son gave out his cellphone number but to guys saying they’re giving away Free Vbucks on Fortnite. What is this issue? He was removed right after.

What happens with this scam?

Watch out for Scammers saying they need you phone number

people are out scamming little kids for their phone number with sprint or Verizon saying they will give you this and that for it but it’s all a scam if you want the hear more message me on Xbox I have been a victim of this and Xbox nor sprint
is willing to help me

You mentioned Verizon 4G. Check out
Millenicom. They resell access to Sprint or Verizon, depending on the plan and device. Their 20GB/mo hotspot plan, back when I signed up for it, was a reselling of Verizon's 3G/4G LTE coverage and came with a Verizon JetPack. They seem to have switched
to a MiFi device, so they may have changed back to Sprint.

Definitely worth giving them a call to see what service they're reselling. $70 for 20GB of hotspot data per month would be plenty for multiplayer gaming on the Xbox One and some movie streaming, though as others have mentioned I wouldn't go all digital this
generation without a better connection that has a much higher cap.

When looking at the payment options for mobile with mine personally there are two options for mobile carriers Verizon and Sprint

You say you switched carriers.

Is the new carrier Sprint?

If yes have you tried signing into your account at account.microsoft.com and going to payment options and removing your phone number under verizon as a payment option and adding your phone number under the Sprint as your carrier as an option?

If your new carrier is not Sprint then this is probably what the problem is. Especially if your payment options are still showing under verizon.

The only providers Microsoft uses for mobile billing is sprint and Verizon. And I assume the charge would show up on your next months phone bill after making the purchase. That's how all mobile billing I've used in the past works.
