Spotify sound

I have just got my xbox and when I went on to download spotify frome the store I noticed that the sound from the spotify music only worked once i was playing a game and not in the xbox menu or when i was in the spotify app. So to clarify, my spotify only plays sound when it’s in the background of a game that im playing. Please can someone explain.
