splitting microsoft accounts between two people.

you have two options you can receive the emails and notifications from 1 account in your other email, this is done by updating the contact information on the account, with this method you will keep both accounts but receive the information on just one
email.

Only thing you can do is set the email you want as primary email, make sure to keep the one currently as primary as a secondary email so it wont get deleted. The only way the email gets deleted is if it is removed from the account completely.

I do apologize for the inconvenience, In this case you will not be able to split your Xbox account from that Microsoft email. In this case this Xbox account will be linked to this Microsoft account, You are able to

update the email address but is not creating a new account you are just updating the current.

Do you know if i were to change the primary alias, would the email accounts remain separate or basically become the same account?

You can only update your Microsoft email, you cannot separate the accounts.
