spindle motor problem?

Hi,

Have you already tried to reposition the console ? (horizontal or vertical).

Besides the laser a dvd player have more critical components which can cause issues.

for example:

- the motor that spins the disc (spindle motor) is faulty

- the motor that moves the laser (head / sled motor) is faulty

- gears that need some cleaning or grease

I have experienced rare case's of hard drive spindle motor shafts seizing up overtime, not on the Xbox, but its the same tech. This can cause the issues your having. If none of the solutions above work for you. You may have to return your Xbox for repair.

There are only two sources in the Xbox which could make the noise you are explaining.

1. The spindle motor in the DVD drive (motor which rotates the disc).

2. The GPU/CPU cooling fan.

You could simply test if its the DVD drive by removing the disc and see if the noise is still present. To me it sounds like the GPU/CPU fan (bearings wearing out). Is it a problem, yes and no. If the fan is still moving air and the Xbox is not over heating
then no. I have seen noisey cooling fans still work sufficiently without causing any problems...

The Xbox will definitely let you know if its overheating from poor cooling

Is there any chance there has been a "foreign object" inserted into the drive? If not chances are your drive will need repair. Send it in if it is under warranty. If you have no warranty (or just don't want to mess with MS) it could be the spindle motor
which spins the disc, could be the alignment of the drive, or could be the magnet that holds the disc in place. A simple fix may be to just replace the whole drive, but some soldering is involved. These guys have helped me before in the past.
