Optical Out - What is it for??

I wouldn't buy the X1 if it didn't have either optical or SPDIF output. My audio setup cost several thousand new, and is still working every well thanks. It doesn't use HDMI though, it mostly uses SPDIF, and has one optical input too, for 5.1 DD and DTS.
I can't spend a grand replacing my processor just for the X1, and if I spent a couple of hundred it would be as good as what I have.

    Xbox One Sound/Audio?

    Hi there,

    -

you will need a audio device that has a optical/SPDIF input, this should allow you to connect the console to the audio device which will be used for the sound. Figure 9 on that link shows the optical in on a audio receiver.

See this link with some (maybe too much) information about optical input :
    www.hardwaresecrets.com/.../82

    -

I hope this somewhat explains what you will likely need

Hi, on your Xbox go to settings/ all settings/ display & sound/ audio output and check that optical audio isn't set to off.

If you intend to use that optical audio cable you can if you wish turn off HDMI audio.

This has been a problem since I have gotten this xbox, I either have to have parts of the screen get cut off (HDMI) or not be able to hear any volume (DVI). So I did research and it said I needed an optical audio spdif cord... got one and set it to DVI and
I still can't hear any audio

ok, the optical audio connection on Tv's is an output only in which case what you're trying isn't going to work, you need to connect the optical audio out on the Xbox to an amp or av/receiver etc. I would stick with HDMI audio to be honest.

As for the display being cut off when using HDMI that is usually a Tv setting, look in the screen options on your Tv for a Just Scan option, it may be named differently depending on the TV so try all the available options on the Tv regarding screen modes.

The thing is that my tv isn't big enough for the default xbox aspect ratio so it cuts edges off... I wish I could use HDMI audio but not being able to see edges of the screen bothers me

You may want to also try setting the TV connection option on the Xbox to Auto Detect if it isn't already set to that. That option is in the Video Output section in the display & sound options.

If you have a mess around with the Tv screen options it should be possible to get the full Xbox display onto the screen, it's just that your Tv is overscanning the display right now and cutting the edges off.

Maybe even drop the Tv resolution settings down to 720p in the display options on the Xbox, if you're trying to force it at 1080p that can cause some issues.

If you look in the picture options on the Tv and set it to game mode does that help any ?
