Sound stopped working after January 9th update

If I understand your situation correctly, it is a common thing to see in these forums today. There was another individual posted about this exact same thing, and this helped them.

Also please be advised sometimes after updates you need to go back into your TV sound settings and select the appropriate options. You will know this worked when the sound starts, I suggest having a video playing or something with sound.

Thank you for taking the time to post this on the Xbox Forums. We understand that you are currently experiencing difficulties with being able to hear audio output from your TV on your Xbox console.

In addition to the link provided to you by Xbox Forums Ambassador T3chnlgydude, it might be worth checking your

display settings on your console to verify that your Overrides is currenlty set to
HDMI. This should allow you the project sound from your TV.

This can be done by following these simple steps:

1. Press the Xbox button on your controller and scroll over to the right to the
   System tab.
2. Select Settings.
3. Under the General tab, select TV & display options.
   
4. Select Video fidelity & overscan.
5. Select Overrides.

Give these a try and let us know if this works for you!

Are you in the insider program dear friend? Have you tried power cycle?

If that not helps try this:

1. Power off your console, and then unplug the power cord to ensure that the console is completely powered off.

2. Wait 30 seconds, then plug the power cord back in.

3. Press and hold the BIND (controller sync button located on the left side of the console or bottom right if a one S or one X) and the EJECT button and then just press the Xbox button on the console once.

4. Continue holding the BIND and EJECT buttons for 10-15 seconds.

5. Listen for two “power-up” tones a couple of seconds apart. You can release the BIND and EJECT buttons after the second power-up tone.

6. The console should power up and take you directly to the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter.

7. To reset your console from the Xbox Startup Troubleshooter, use the D-pad and A button on your controller to select Reset this Xbox.

9. When prompted, select Keep games and apps. This option will reset the OS and delete all potentially corrupted data without deleting your games or apps.
