Sound projected through headphones sounds different with new update

So before today’s update rolled out, I was listening to music on my Xbox One on YouTube with my Turtle Beach headset, and everything sounded normal. I had to go to the store to get something and I left my Xbox on. I came back 15 minutes later to find the
Xbox interface / dashboard updated. Nothing bad, right? Well, I logged back into my account and started listening to music again, but I noticed something different. The music seemed to have a weird tone to it. All the voices sound kind of different and it
sounds like it’s playing the song twice at the same time with an echo tone to it. (Ex. Sabaton - Ghost Division, KonekoKitten meepcity video[latest vid]) I don’t know if this is part of the update or I screwed up my headset when I put it down.

Does your headset get its game sound from the controller or from a different source. For example my headset us an optical headset and receives game audio from the optical port in the xbox, then sends it wirelessly to my headset. To get chat I have to plug
into the controller. In my case I get 2 sources of game sound if my slider in my mixer is allowing game sound from my controller. I have to make sure its slid all the way to just chat. Maybe when the UI change it reset this setting?

My headset gets its sound from the controller. I did a hard reset on the Xbox and now the sound projected out of it is back to normal. Sorry for the late-ish reply.

Just try doing a Hard Reset on your console. Also, make sure all connections that are wired are properly installed.
You may need to update your headset as well with Turtle Beach.

As the page that XBF Javier R linked to explains, the console can't know if you use the headset for chat only or for game sound as well, and will not mute the TV sound output.

If you don't get game audio from your headset, but chat sound is working, then go to the settings, and under "Display & Sound" enable game sound through your headphone.

Unless you have bought the Dolby Atmos for Headphones app (and not only the free trial app), you should use Stereo or Windows Sonic to get game sound from your headphones.

If neither game sound nor chat sound is coming from the headset, try the headset on a different controller, or try different headphones on your controller (e.g. earplugs that came with your smartphone or something like that).

Go to the console settings, and under the video and audio settings, you can enable the option to hear game sound through your headphones.

On the same settings page, you can also choose to have either regular stereo sound coming through your headphones, or you can use "Windows Sonic" to get spatial 3D sound, similar to Dolby Atmos, or if you have purchased the full Dolby Atmos App, you can
also enable Dolby Atmos for headphones, and get Atmos 3D sound through your headphones.

After you've enabled game sound through your headphones, you can then choose the balance between game sound and chat sound with the sliders mentioned by the posts above.
