sorc abilities acting weird?

I know certain things dont last through weapon swaps, but from what i've read is that you can lay a dot, swap weapons and the dot stays up. Maybe its been changed idk, but either way its not acting right for me. Sometimes I put up the daedric prey and
swap weapons and the curse never explodes or sometimes it explodes but a ludicrous amount of time after the duration. So i dont really know whats going on there.

And for power overload(new ability to me so i may not understand it), sometimes i turn it on and attempting light attacks accomplish nothing, no attacks happen so I end up just turniing it off when that happens. Sometimes it stays active for long periods,
i'm sure i shouldnt be able to keep the heavy attack going for over a minute.

make a water sorce and forrest then some will spawn, same for squids, make a big water sorce

I don't use spells so I am happy I did kill him since he dropped me that amazing ring, he also dropped me a spell that does the same thing

 

also, why does power surge on my bars turn into thundering presence when i use overload? Is there an unwritten rule or a written one i missed somewhere? what if i didnt have thundering presence as an ability would it still switch power surge to it?
