SONY KD-65XH9005 SONOS ARC & XBOX SERIES X Dolby Atmos Issues

I originally created a post but wanted to add an update/follow up but the thread was locked. Below is the original post and the follow up in case it helps someone else:

I recently purchased a sonos arc which arrived last week, setup as per the sonos instructions and was all working fine.

When the xbox series X is set to output dolby atmos the sound drops every few seconds. When i have the output set to 5.1 then the sound is fine. I have downloaded the ATMOS app on the xbox too.

I am unsure which device is the problem, whether it is the soundbar or the TV Struggling to process the sound correctly. However i have never had any of the above issues when using headphones or the TV Speakers.

    Setup on the TV:

    Speakers: Audio System

    eARC mode: Auto

    Digital Audio Out: PCM

    Pass through mode: Auto

I am also posting this on the SONY help and SONOS help forums.

    *****UPDATE ******

So thought id check back in and give an update in case it helps anyone else.

The issue on the TV still persists, the sound cuts out randomly when watching apps (Disney+, Netflix etc), when watching Live TV and directly through the DVB Tuner.

Further more the Xbox Series X has sound cutting out every 0.5 seconds when set to bitstream, dolby atmos and 4K@120hz. I change the xbox back to 4K@60Hz then bitstream & dolby atmos works fine. Another issue being that dolby vision only works at 4K@60Hz due to the TV's restrictions. There is an enhanced setting within the tv HDMI output for dolby vision but both 4K@120hz and dolby vision do not work.

This has been found out by further experimentation and more people across the internet doing research and putting up videos and articles regarding this TV, soundbars and the xbox series x.

The conclusion being a poorly configured eARC HDMI. All fixable according to the experts via a firmware update. Which is great but frustrating this has not happened yet on a TV that was advertised specifically as 'Next Gen Gaming Ready'.

I am now in the process with Sony Customer services to sort a fix or return the TV and purchase something that is advertised correctly and works.

    :)

Dolby Atmos w/ Sony HT-X9000F Sound bar question / setup

    https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/D12isMWJ+fS.pdf - The Manual

HDMI ARC Does not support Dolby Atmos or DTS:X. They really have to mention that more. The only way to get Dolby Atmos is from a direct connection with something like a Blu-ray player or your computer. If it goes through a tv, it won't support Dolby Atmos.
The manual, use CTRL + F and type atmos to find it, lists what you get with a connection.

HDMI Direct Connection | HDMI ARC
    | Optical |

    LPCM 2.0 | Yes | Yes | Yes |

    LPCM 5.1 | Yes | No | No |

    LPCM 7.1 | Yes | No | No |

    Dolby Digital | Yes | Yes | Yes |

    Dolby TrueHD | Yes | No | No |

    Dolby Digital+ | Yes | Yes | No |

    Dolby Atmos | Yes |Refer Below| No |

    DTS-HD HRA | Yes | No | No |

DTS-HD MA, DTS LBR, DTS: X, and DSD are HDMI Direct Connection only.

Ok, as to why I said refer below for Dolby Atmos on ARC is that there is a difference between Dolby Atmos. So you can encode atmos into either TrueHD or EAC3. If something doesn't support atmos, the system falls back to either TrueHD or EAC3. (TrueHD is
most common in files. HDMI ARC does not support TrueHD + Atmos combo. However, some TVs can support EAC3 + Atmos. So for most files, you'll have TrueHD + Atmos. HDMI ARC will not support TrueHD or Atmos. However, some TVs can support EAC3 + Atmos. However,
you will rarely find this. Your best bet is to directly plug something like your graphics card (atmos must be supported), Blu-ray player or anything that can output Atmos. HDMI ARC is soo confusing to deal with and that's why many people just assume that it
can support atmos. I've heard new software is coming out that may support atmos on arc though.

    Explanation:

Dolby Atmos for Blu-ray & Basically everything else - Direct Connection - NO ARC

Dolby Atmos for streaming (Netflix, Amazon Video) - HDMI ARC is okay!

Conclusion: HDMI ARC is limited right now. You should use a direct connection if you want to fully experience atmos on your programs.

Edit: Steaming sites like netflix use DD+ which is EAC3 + Atmos. So you can use HDMI ARC and watch netflix with atmos but... that's pretty limited.

Check your Audio Receiver 0x80bd0009 Dolby Atmos

The optical port won't allow him to get Dolby Atmos sound though, so that might be an issue for the OP. ARC (not eARC) doesn't support Dolby Atmos, so maybe that's the problem here?

Netflix Not Outputting Dolby Atmos On Xbox One

I have had the same issue with Netflix and Apple TV (a few months), no Dolby Atmos, although there is a label Dolby Atmos at the title and chosen track with Dolby Atmos in the application. My AVR shows a PCM input signal for this application.

My setup is: Xbox Series X - Denon AVR X3700H - TV Samsung 75Q80T

    Xbox audio issues

First of all, the tomb raider thing was a joke based on all the advertising Xbox did on Dolby Atmos when it first came to the console “which it still hasn’t”

This issue appears for gaming “you can literally find a post with like 27k views with hundreds of people saying the exact same thing”

And like I said, I’m using a Sonos arc system.
