Songs streamed from PC to 360 playing at fraction their normal speed

Note: NOT using "Xbox Music" service.

Particular songs from my PC's hard drive play at about 1/10 their normal speed when streamed to an Xbox 360 via the system music player. I only started noticing this problem less than a month ago. Incidences of this issue don't appear to date back before
2014. All with the same problem have either found no permanent fix for the issue or were redirected elsewhere. Some found workarounds by either re-ripping all of the "problem" songs from cd or replacing the hard drive the songs were on.

    Further details regarding my issue:

    • I'm on a wired network using Cat5 and 6 Ethernet cables
    • Both Xbox 360's in the house replicated the same result
    • The songs in question are always the same ones, otherwise healthy (play in any computer media player), and come from various sources.
    • Getting a fresh version of a problem song fixes nothing, until I rename one of the fields in its meta data (under properties)
That last one is strange. I don't understand why the 360 would prejudice songs with a particular title/album name. Support for this issue that
doesn't involve redirecting me to Console & Accessories would be greatly appreciated. Reripping/downloading/tagging the problem tracks would be pointless if it's just going to occur again.

    :)

Ads with Xbox Music on Windows 8

    Hi Madmya,

Are you signed in with a profile associated with a active Xbox LIVE profile? Have you tried disconnecting from your network and playing these songs while in offline mode to see if the app is still allowing you to play the files locally? How often do you
hear an ad and are any songs playing ones that might be streamed from the service as opposed to being played locally? Let us know. Thanks!

Hey, Mephiles2! This is a weird one. I'm not entirely sure why it would be doing this to you. Are you able to try to play them through the Media Center app with normal speeds at all?

Unfortunately I can't seem to link the one computer that does have Media Center (running Vista) to the Xbox. After getting the key from the console I opened Media Center on the PC and clicked settings > extender > Xbox 360 Extender (with the starred-out
setup key), entered the setup key and confirmed the prompts. The setup process only completes the first two steps before stating an error occurred.

Sorry for the time it took to get back, these notification emails were going into the junk folder for whatever reason.

  6. No problem! Thank you for checking for me. We can actually troubleshoot that and it might fix whatever issue you're having with these particular songs.

Now, this is going to be an odd request, but set up Media Center again. I want it to fail. Once it does, I want you to open up your Event Viewer on your PC. You can do this by just searching for it in your Start Menu. On the left hand side
of that, I want you to hit the drop arrow next to Applications and Services Log. You should see Media Center in there. Select it, and there should be some codes loading in the center. The Level
should be Error (it might be Warning) and there should be an Event ID listed on that line. Post back what that Event ID is and we can start from there!

    Level: Error

    Event ID: 405

It's worth mentioning all the music with the problem is on the Windows 8 pc without Media Center, and the reason I need the music playable on the system music player is so it can be heard during gameplay.

Oho! Thanks for that, Mephiles. Don't want to troubleshoot a computer we won't be working on anyway.

Are you using Windows Media Player on the Windows 8 machine, then? That aside, what router are you using?

I can use WMP, but prefer Winamp since it can jump to any song I search for in my playlist without erasing the list, and has no trouble playing FLAC and ALAC files (not that I bother trying to play them on the Xbox).

I'm using a D-Link ADSL2+ router, model no. DSL-502T (it's rather old now). Everything from the router goes through a D-Link Ethernet switch before reaching appliances around the house.

On a media player note, WMP can't seem to play 7 of my MP3s properly; the entirety of each of these tracks is nothing but a high-pitched scrambled crackling noise. These actually play just fine on the Xbox, or anything else for that matter. This was the
reason I started using Winamp again on the current computer.

  10. Well then, let's see if we can make this simpler. I don't think that the switch will cause any problems, but are we able to move things around a bit to get the Xbox and the PC connected directly to the ADSL2+ gateway? Switches can sometimes cause degradation
in the signal, though it does seem far fetched that it would cause it only on a select number of songs. I'm only asking this just to make sure we rule out everything and make it simpler for the Xbox, which really is just a simple machine. Switches can confuse
the poor thing. Songs streamed from PC to 360 playing at fraction their normal speed ;)

Regarding your gateway, can you make sure that you have the most up to date firmware on it, too? This will ensure that we aren't running into a firmware issue inside the device.

In regard to connecting directly to the gateway; that was only possible by connecting the Xbox directly to the router via the one available lan port, and the pc to the router's usb port. Attempt to stream music to the Xbox is halted when the pc can't be
detected. On the pc's end, no network could be detected when attached to the router via usb.

Just for the hell of it I connected the Xbox Ethernet directly to the back of the pc; the Xbox couldn't detect the pc this way either.

  12. Thanks for that! I didn't realize that your gateway was only a single port. That's my mistake.

Is there anyway we can go wireless for both devices? It's not optimal to do streaming that way, but I'd like to rule out that switch.

Ok so after two weeks I decided to come back and try to solve this, but I ended up just replacing the problem songs with the originals from various sources (download, conversion, etc.). In this time, while browsing through one of the albums on the Xbox that
I knew housed slow-mo songs, I discovered that a handful of other previously unscathed tracks had also gone bad. I then marked them and replaced those as well. That being said this issue certainly looks like something that could keep growing into a never ending
patch job. For all I know the cause could be something as insignificant as the same song being played, or otherwise accessed on the computer and Xbox at once.

Afterwards most of the replacement songs actually held together, with the exception of one or two which were too stubborn to play normally. With these it took a bit of title juggling/changing between each song and the one I was trying to replace it with,
but they too were eventually amended. For one of the songs it was actually the 'slow' version that went back to normal after changing the title back and forth by a few characters, similar to the situation I described in the first post.

With still no probable cause identified, this problem is just as unpreventable as when it started. The only precaution I can think of taking is trying not to tamper with/reorganize the files within the music folder my Xboxes watch while any of the family
are playing the music through one of the consoles. I'll now leave it to someone else to try and resolve this mess.

  15. Oh man, Mephiles2! Sorry we couldn't get it completely figured out, but I am happy to see a workaround that seems to work for you.
