The failure rate is no higher than expected really. The 360 was an extreme circumstance due to poor designed which was finally resolved with the S model.

The Xbox One has a small track record of broken disc drives but I've not heard much of that recently so I presume that it has been noted and already fixed on the production line. As already mentioned, just don't interrupt your updates and treat it as well
as you would with anything you spend £450 on. Keep it in a ventilated place don't chuck it around too much.

 

Console failure rates are more or less by region. There is really a incredibly low rate but the ones that do fail seem to come from three specific places mostly. Europe (UK specifically), Target (more in central U.S. but their shipping was not great), and
Ebay. More or less, its mostly a matter of shipping. So, just look up reviews specific to your region and actually research what there is to see.

Can't say I would've ever heard that kinda stuff either (even less so followed it myself) and havn't had any issues. Obviously physically moving (or more so the impact as movement stops) can damage components, but it does not have to stay 2 hours in the
spot untouched or let the device not do anything else while it's updating or something. Tech really doesn't have a break-in period.



Also what comes to interrupting day one update, the given advice is sorta funny, as even MS has recommended pulling the plug at some point if it seems frozen. I had to do that myself too when it failed to update on the first go. Obviously it should be the
absolute last resort but the day one update has been reported to fail/freeze by many and seeing that it happened to me the first time too, I would hesitate giving that advice to anyone, unless they enjoy watching that screen doing absolutely nothing for the
next week But yes, absolutely last resort, interrupting system updates is never good, but sometimes the only way.

Unless you're buying it from a stranger out the back of a van... when you get home just put your receipt in the safe place where you keep all your expensive electronics purchases and in the unlikely scenario that you get a ONE with a fault you can go back
to the retailer for a replacement or full refund.

I think he is just double checking to make sure there isn't a RROD situation going on.

 

I was Xbox 1'ing 10 minutes after hook up. Had a minor disc drive issue (I truly blame Despicable Me 2 disc for the issue, as it only happens when my niece watches that dvd). I had a Ghosts update yesterday, took 6 mins to complete.

Planning on buying the system at my local walmart. I know somebody that works there and I can use their walmart discount card and get 10% off the price

 

I don't know Walmart's Employee Discount policy but I'm pretty sure 10% off the Xbox One will end up making Walmart LOSE money off the console so I doubt they'd allow that. But hey, if it does work, that's a nice $50 savings! Sweet!
