Sometime this week

Waiting on my taxes to finally to get the xbox one. I have a question before I buy? What is the failure rates on the consoles? Hopefully I won't have any issues with the console once I get it I got the games for the x1 just waiting on the system.

There's a few of the "most typical flaws" that you might want to check for when you get the device. Check the controller's build quality, try the disc drive with a disc you dont mind losing first (as in, not that new shiny 60 dollar game) and listen if there
is any crunchy sounds coming from the drive and obviously also test the eject button in the process. Check that Kinect works (sees you and hears you), check front "plate" for scratches. I think those are the most common ones you can easily check. If there
is a problem with internals you will probably find that out too pretty soon once you start using it

Depending where you live, the Xbox One might refuse to turn on if it's too cold. For example here it was -15 celsius around the time of delivery. I had to wait like 15 minutes for the device to warm up a bit inside before I managed to boot it up. But this
isn't really a flaw, but just a warning so you don't think you got a broken device if you live in a cold area That said, likely not gonna be a problem if you just walk in the store to buy one.

What a wierd question.



Unless you're buying it from a stranger out the back of a van... when you get home just put your receipt in the safe place where you keep all your expensive electronics purchases and in the unlikely scenario that you get a ONE with a fault you can go back
to the retailer for a replacement or full refund.

OP please take this advice.the xb1 is like a basic windows 8 pc,and many years of gaming on both console and pc tell me hands down,with a device such as a pc,new pcs need a cold start which means arrange were you are going to have it,completely unwrap it
, and place it in desired spot,

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES TURN IT ON FOR 2 HOURS,hard drives and ram do not like being moved,this is a correct cold start,it fuly gives time for any transit the xbox has had to settle down and reach a room temperature,even though its the being still in 1 place
is what your aiming for.

This is the reason why so many people have had start up issues because they have not followed the correct protocal with devices of this tech.

Bar a few game issues,which lie on developers hands,I have not had any off these problems that seems to have beem had by so many.

To add to this when installing anything either DD or disk or app,please for the enjoymentvof your xbox 1 , DO NOT DO ANYTHING ELSE untill install is fully complete,its brand new and as much as the idea of snapping , immense multitasking,again the xb1 needs
to settle.

To add on the kinect which works amazing if you follow certain steps, definitly use the voice app,and key phrases such as 'xbox show my stuff' does actually train your voice in quicker.

On the box there is the optimum set up for distance for the kinect follow this to the word if possible.

Concerning your power options for the 1st 48hrs have it on energy saver.

To be completely honest from gamer to gamer wishing you the best for your xb1,it does need a fair few tweeks, and I would seriously look at the current 33 games and go by geners of game,and if the moneys there 10 games minimum,to fully experiance the current
of what the xb1 can do, if you just play ghosts for example then im not surprised why you would find it a disappointment, again lies inthe developers hands, its what I did,trust me you wont be disappointed.

In all my years of gaming on PC's and Consoles that is the first time I have ever heard anyone recommend such advice also, with AMD chips, the colder it is the better, so it's not going to affect the APU. I've never had any problems with any new hardware,
be it in a PC or a console. Never had any issues playing games during install either. It's designed to be used in this way so telling people they shouldn't do it kind of borders on scaremongering.

 

Not that I have one yet OP, but I read these and other forums a fair bit in order to educate myself before buying one... One bit of advice not mentioned so far (which I wouldn't do anyway), is DO NOT interrupt the "day one" patch/update process even if it
seems to be taking forever, or it seems like it's stopped altogether. It could brick your shiny new One.

While good advice Xenomorph, especially considering it's length, it's generally good practice to never interrupt any system update where possible.

 

i think the failure rate is something like 2:1. odds stacked against you. So far, Ive had two broken controllers, my kinect just died and now my system is possessed and turns on whenever it wants. good luck.

For sure... I'm a web tester, so this to me is elementary as per my "which I wouldn't do anyway" statement... I just meant in terms of the specifics of the Xbox One patch with the green screen etc as I haven't experienced it first hand YET... But thanks

@MEGA...sorry, there is not a 50% failure rate...If there was it would be huge news..In fact, if there was more than 10% failure it would probably be all over the tech news sites....

 

I had no issues with mine. It does take a while to boot up. Be patient. Have fun with your new one!

Buy the
console from a reputable retailer with a decent return policy. If you're in the USA, buy from Amazon. If there is any issue with the console (grinding disc drive, flakey controller) in the first 30 days, return it to Amazon for an exchange or refund. Do NOT
send it to MS for repair within the first 30 days.
