Someone Used My E-Mail To Create A Second Gamertag

Here is the long and short of it.

    The Long

I have not used my 360 much recently, so I was surprised when I started to get e-mail receipts from Microsoft, for new XBL Gold memberships and such. I checked my banking statements and found no errors. I double check the e-mail and it is addressed to
someone with an entirely different name than me, (My e-mail address is my proper name at my e-mail provider). I deleted it thinking Microsoft had a glitch.

Then I started getting two copies of e-mails from Xbox. One was addressed to me and the other to another Gamertag. The e-mail addresses were slightly different ( ie My.Proper.Name at whatever dot whatever and mypropername at whatever dot whatever ) but
my e-mail provider sees them as the same. Microsoft sees them as different which allowed the second gamertag to be created.

I have reached out to the other person with no response. I asked them politely to double check that they had the correct e-mail address attached to their account. And if they did not, then to correct it. And if they did have their correct e-mail listed
to reach out to me or Microsoft to make them aware of the problem. Well... Microsoft no longer sends me my e-mails, however I still get the other person's e-mails.

    The Short

Someone created a Gamertag with an e-mail address that does not exist and is so close to mine that my e-mail provider thinks it is mine. My e-mail consists of my proper name, however the other person's proper name is nothing like mine. The other person
will not respond to me on XBL to get this sorted out.

    How do I proceed?

    :)

Can't Change my Microsoft Account to my New Xbox Live Gamer tag....Help!

You will have to create a third e-mail, swap the second gamertag to the third e-mail, then swap the gamertag you want to the e-mail you want, there's no other way.

    Xbox account roulette

My son created an xbox live account with his mom's e-mail. Then he got an e-mail account of his own. He created another gamertag with that account, but has never used it. Now my daughter is old enough to have her own gamertag, but can't use Mom's e-mail
because we can't switch her brother's to the e-mail he always uses. How do we do this? I won't create an e-mail account for my daughter. Easiest way to do this should be to delete the gamertag associated with the son's e-mail, and then switch his xbox live
    account to HIS e-mail.

I would move to another email provider. that is quite a potential security risk they have if it is sending you email not actually addressed to you. You could try contacting your email provider and explaining what is happening and say that you are concerned
you are receiving email not actually addressed to you.

    Thanks for the reply.

My e-mail provider is my former employer. They are well aware of the issue.

The "non-punctuation sensitive" aspect of the e-mail address is actually a security feature. Think about it as if it were Larry Hyrb. So, Larry.Hyrb @ provider.com is his. No one can claim LarryHyrb @ provider.com and pretend to be him.
[Larry Hyrb being XBox's Major Nelson, which you probably knew]

Interesting aside, Your GamerTag is familiar, I think that you have played Destiny against/with a friend of mine who oddly enough was one of the first XBox Ambassadors... He was part of the Beta team.

    OvercomeOrchid,

I appreciate your comment, however changing my password does not change anything. (S)he does not have access to my account. (S)he is using what Microsoft may call an alias account that is attached to mine. It is not an actual e-mail address, however it
gets delivered to me as it was mine. Think of it as someone giving out your physical mailing address or cell number as their own.

The issue seems so simple to me and yet no one seems to understand it. Maybe it is more complicated than it appears to me.... Or maybe, I am not explaining it properly.

The problem I am having is that this has gone on for several months and everyone I have spoken to at Microsoft or officially representing Microsoft refuses to help because this account is "protected" which leads me to believe that it is a juvenile's account.
They do purchase pornography from Xbox Video and M rated games from the Game store, so it is not a carefully watched juvenile. What I have asked Microsoft to do, and they have refused because it is a "protected" account, is simply unassign my e-mail address
(or its alias) to that account. Force the other person to reset his/her e-mail address to something that (s)he can verify as their own.

While I HAVE NO INTENTION OF DOING SO, I could force a password reset, then change the password and e-mail before going on my merry little way. However, I am well aware that
by doing so, I would be violating the Microsoft TOS and be subject to permaban. That would make me no better than the person who is knowingly using an alias of my e-mail address against my wishes.

The one "solution" that Microsoft has suggested that I have not tried is add this person as my friend and then as soon as (s)he accept my friend request ask the Enforcement Team to drop the ban hammer. The hitch is that the first thing I did was try to
resolve this in private between the two of us via Messaging on XBL. I only went to Microsoft and the support forums when the person refused to use an actual e-mail address or at least one not connected to mine. (S)he knows that I am angry at him/her. So
I have to bet on the stupidity of someone else in order to get something done. That is my only alternative?

    OvercomeOrchid,

Once again, I appreciate your commenting on this as hopefully it will catch the attention of an Xbox Support official.
