Did a system cache clear on all drives and the game works now! Paul with the fellow gamer chat line helped me out - was dubious since it wasn't Microsoft's official support team, but it worked

Hey All,

I'm trying to play some original Xbox games on the compatible list (The Thing, Spider-Man 2) on my Xbox 360 S and even with an official hard drive it's not playing. Attached are photos of the hard drive and the error screen I get when I try to play.

Even with an internet connection to make sure it's updated, it won't work.

I tried manually updating the 360 after downloading the update from microsoft (link) formatting a thumb drive for MS DOS (FAT32) and copying all
the unzipped files to it (straight to the drive, not enclosed in another folder), but it doesn't ask to update.

I'm downloading with a Mac (no PC in the house), but if the thumb drive is formatted properly I don't know how that might impact the download, unzipping and pasting the files to the drive.

The game is backwards compatible with the 360, but not the One. In order for backwards compatibility to work, the 360 requires an official MS brand 360 hard drive.

It's likely because the hard drive you're using on the Xbox 360 isn't an official Microsoft hard drive. Only official Xbox hard drives from MS will allow you to run original Xbox games made backwards compatible on the 360 platform.

Original Xbox games won't run on a 360 if:

You don't have an internal hard drive
Your internal drive is not official - knock off hard drives from eBay and Amazon won't run original games.
Your 360 hard drive is faulty

If it's the original Xbox version of the game that is backwards compatible with the 360, then it requires an official MS brand hard drive in order to work. The HD you have listed as having 3.2gb free is most likely the internal flash memory and not a hard
drive. If the other hard drive is not an actual MS brand Xbox hard drive, the game won't work.
