So my xbox one s, isn't reading any of my dvds or even my xbox 360 discs

I still think Xbox 1 is a better DVD player than my Xbox 360 slim 250gb console. When I play any DVD on my 360, even if it has one tiny finger print smudge on the disc, the Dashboard will bring up a notification bubble "attempting to read media". On Xbox
1, it can have several finger smudges on the disc and the Xbox 1's disc drive will still be able to play and read it. I must be one of the lucky ones with a good disc drive and have had Xbox 1 since Day 1 (Day 1 edition) ;D

I think Microsoft went real cheap with their disc drive choice for Xbox 1, which is a Philips disc drive. It isn't designed to function with the console placed vertically/upright like what Xbox 360 and PS4 can. I have the Xbox 1 Day One Edition console with
Kinect got it at Launch, and it hasn't failed me. Make sure the disc is clean and try to look after discs even though I think Blu-ray discs are meant to be more durable than Xbox 360 DVD game discs. Haven't had any problems, I got one issue with one of my
Xbox 1 games, but that's because it had finger print smudges on one side of the disc. I also have an Xbox 360 slim console when I joined Xbox and that too is still going fine. But with my experience on my Xbox 360 console, the Dashboard will bring up "attempting
to read media file" if my DVD movies have even minor smudges where as my Xbox 1 console is able to read the discs without any problems.

The optical drive in the Xbox One is a Blu-ray drive. Xbox One discs are on Blu-ray disc, same as HD Blu-ray movies. Xbox 360 games came on DVD disc.

Oversimplifying my explanation a little, the Xbox One has separate lasers for reading DVD discs than it does for reading Xbox One blu-ray discs.

The laser that is used to read DVD's has failed. This isn't a software issue, it's a hardware one. Unfortunately you can't fix this yourself, you'll need your console repaired. Sorry.

It's not the discs it's your console. If your console can not read DVD movies then it won't read Xbox 360 games either. DVD movie discs use the same type of discs that 360 games use (DVD-9).

The Xbox One has two lasers to read discs. One for Blu-rays - which Xbox One discs games are made of - and one for reading DVD's and Xbox 360 games.

To put it simply, the Blu-ray drive has two laser's built into the drive. One for reading DVD discs and the other to read Blu-ray discs. Xbox 360 games and DVD films use the DVD disc format, while Xbox One and Series X|S discs use Blu-ray discs. If one or the other lasers fail, the console will be able to read one format but not the other.

This isn't something you can fix yourself. You would either need a new console or get your console repaired. Note however that the original Xbox One is no longer supported for repairs from Microsoft.
