I completely understand your frustration and have been there myself. The easy answer is to uninstall then reinstall - this can be painful especially for large games over slow connections (yes some of us have slow satellite based internet connections) where
it can take days to reinstall a game.

How fast is you internet connection - since I see this problem more frequently on slower connections?

To the point of why updates arent stored separately (long term) - as far as I can tell updates are merged into the original game binaries (let's say a game is originally 100 GB - now the first update arrives to replace some of the code (20 GB) if the update
werent merged into the original game download and would remain separate - the game would now take 120 GB drive space instead of the original 100 GB.

I dont mean to say an update is always size neutral but game makers will try to keep the consumed hard drive space as small as possible since console hard drives arent limitless in size (yet) and if you wanted to buy/install any more of their games they'd
be shortchanging themselves.

If you continue to have issues while it may be frustrating to do so you may need to remove the game an install it again. There is no option to run a scan on game files to find an issue to correct it is quicker to just install again.

update and more content to the game, if there was an option to wipe update only the possibility of your game being corrupted will increase.

Microsoft doesn't make destiny. They aren't the one your money goes too.

Also power cycle your console by holding down the power button for 15 seconds until restart and check.

I have also recently started playing destiny 2 again.

I left the game around light level 540 so I have 2 seasons worth of content to play and the next season begins in a week or so
