Smart delivery upgrade location?

So the Xbox Series X and PS5 both support external HDD storage as a method of storing games, but it is limited to only Xbox One and PS4 games, as next-generation games will rely on the fast SSDs of the new consoles. However, both next-generation consoles
offer free upgrades of games that launch on current-gen that get upgraded. Is there a way to store the primary game on an external HDD and only the next-gen upgrade on the internal SSD? So as to make best use of the internal storage? I have never used an external
HDD so it's likely that an update/expansion for a game must be stored in the same location as the base game, however it would be great if someone knew.

Hi there.

Thank you for reaching out to the forum. Unfortunately not. All Series S/X and Xbox One Games with Smart Delivery, thoughs have to run from the internal storage or expansion slot drive. But for Original Xbox, X360 and
Xone game without enhancement, they should still run fine from your external unit.

I have the same question. I have FH4 and Gears 5 on external hdd and i play on Xone X. What will happen when I plug in my external hdd to my new x series x. WIll the new concol see games already installed on my external hdd and how then smart delivery
will work?? Must I change location of FH4 and Gears 5 from external hdd to internal ssd to use smart delivery?

They haven't said exactly how Smart Delivery will work with discs, but if the game supports Smart Delivery you will get the upgraded version. Otherwise, it'll still work with the disc through backwards compatibility.

When the Series X/S was sent out to testers pre-release, it was possible to install Xbox One versions of Smart Delivery Games....however, it seems it was made impossible for general release.
