    Slow internet equals sadness -_-

I remember once when my place use to have capped internet. We went over it once and our internet was slowed to dial up for the rest of the month. Jumped on Minecraft multiplayer Xbox 360 and the world map chunks were loading terribly slow. It was like playing
with someone on the other side of the world who was host who had bad internet. Like when NZ and Australian's play COD BO2 zombies on Xbox 360 with UK/US people. Either group is going to be red barring. I then hear many remarks from NZ/Australian's in the lobby
"k who's the host, why are they up past their bed time. We just got home from school or work. They seriously have to be online at like 2am in the morning?".

Stay away from ADSL. ADSL struggles in the Upload department (average 1mb/s upload speed if you're lucky). NZ ISP's say ADSL download speeds average 7-14mb/s download speed. Best to go with fibre or cable.

It's not rocket science though when NZ ISP's charge only a $10/month difference between 80GB and unlimited data, that most would go for the unlimited. It was pointed out in a NZ newspaper article that ISP's should charge more than a $10 difference. But it's
the ISP's job to maintain their network and make sure it can handle it's customer numbers. In the newspaper article last year, it mentioned how those normally with 30mb/s download and 10mb/s upload speeds use to slow down to like 2mb/s download speeds and
like 0.5mb/s upload speeds. It also mentioned that a lot of people over here were using Netflix since it only became available to Australasia since last year, and I suppose NZ ISP's weren't expecting so many people to go on Netflix. I read Vodafone NZ is already
carrying out work to improve their networking for NZ customers. The NZ government is rolling out fibre internet but it won't be available everywhere until like 2022 or 2019 (it's only available to minimal parts of NZ, not even all suburban areas in the cities
here have access to fibre. Vodafone NZ is like the only ISP which offers faster internet to more places.

well...(1) Satellite has never been usuable for consoles. MS stated that wayyyyy back in 2002. The Windstream tecch I had here recently was telling me that Windstream was started to lose $$ on DSL so I hope fiber optic is heading this way. (2) 1.5 would
not be a problem if you did not have to install a disc. But realistically you would need a connection in the MB range to download games in under an hour!

And also...MB is 'megabyte' where as Mb is 'megabit'. There is a huge difference. I have 12Mbps.. 12 mega bits per second down. It would take (and it did) 22 hrs to download Halo 5 five.

    Peace, J.R.

even though i have fibre in the house and that is unlimited, my s7 edge has the goodness of 4G completely unlimited and most of the time that beats the crap out of my home connection. if only it was stable enough for gaming.

Before TWC merged this past year I was getting 20mbps, hardely any drops and no rental fee's. After the merger I get 15mbps, constant drops and $10.00 per month rental fees. When you call to complain they tell you its not their fault but actually your state
lawmakers. So I then asked, who bribed them? "Enough of that, hate to see you go, have a nice day." Wish I had recorded that conversation lol.

No, todays tech seems to not like anything less than a constant 5mbps.

I agree 4G can beat home netork speeds. I did a test on my phone and got 68mbs down and.... 29mbs upload speed. But there is latency with phones/4G. 4G speeds can do upload speeds twice as faster as my home network upload speed of 10mbs.

  10. Oh my! My internet averages about 18mb download and 800kb upload and on the weekends it was sitting around 3mb download and I could just not play games like that. I could get on our National Broadband Network that is meant to be 25mb download and 2mb upload,
but I just don't know if I trust satellite internet. I guess things may have change from 5 years ago when I last had it, but fool me twice, shame on me.

It's times like these when you truly must question if gaming is worth it outside of the big cities....

  14. It still all depends on what you're connecting to... your ISP connection is only one part of the equation. If you connect to a slow or busy/overloaded server, or your ISP routes you through a crappy relay at any point... slow performance. I verified this
fact for myself just the other day, just playing around.

Fallout 4 had a 2.3 GB update. So I decided to do a little experiment. I went into the network settings on the console and did an "advanced diagnostics" test. It spit out the numbers that it gives me 99% of the time. 76 DL - 14.99 UL - 88ms ping. That is
my console's connection to w/e server MS provides for that test.

Now, since the latest UI update, you can watch your network's performance while you update a game by going into your games and apps and scrolling to the queue.

I started the update, it started out at 50Mbps... which lasted a whole 5 seconds and then plummeted to 20Mbps. Then slowly dropped to 5Mbps. It hovered there for awhile and actually dropped to 3Mbps at a few points. It never did stabilize. Literally, it
bounced from 3Mbps to 20Mbps (after the initial 50) and everywhere in between, sometimes hovering for a few minutes at 12, 15 and 18Mbps. Talk about a slow DL...

But, doing another Advanced Diagnostics test in the settings right after that... and it showed the exact same numbers I already posted. Actually, no... it didn't... the ping was 86ms, not 88.

I'm paying for 150 Down, 75 Up BTW... and if I use a PC and go with a site like speedtest... I get much closer to the numbers I'm paying for... but then again, they either allow you to choose your server, or direct you to one that's going to have a good
connection. Which won't be the servers your console has to connect to.

In short, it doesn't matter how good your connection is if you connect to a slow server or have a slow connection anywhere in between. Just like a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

but the thing with the downloads on xbox live is the game comes down unpacked, the more files there are the slower the transfer speed and games can contain thousands of small files which will go to crawl speeds, if it was one large file then the download
speed would stabalise at a faster rate, they should just download a zipped up package then unpack locally which would reduce download times and reduce data usage.
