Slow downloads / Many hops and latency - Brazil

Hello!

I use Xbox for many years without problems (with a high ping (170-210) for tests but all this years without packet loss or problems with download speed when I buy some game. Recently my xbox can't download with my ISP speed plan (120 download). The rate
that used to be oscillating between 70-100 now is only 15, 10, 5 and I'm having a lot of packet loss (almost 15% few days ago).

For working with IT and being easy I did some traceroute tests for 2 hosts (xeas.xboxlive.com and local domain globo.com) and I asked some friends to do the same (to make sure the problem is not here with some ISP route), so:

Me:

Country: Brazil

City: Araras - SP

ISP: Net Virtua 120/10

Problem: slow downloads, packet loss, high ping with Xbox Live, many hops to xeas.xboxlive.com compared to globo.com (Brazilian website).

Friend 1: Gelson

Country: Brazil

City: Palhoça - SC (almost 900km away from me)

ISP: Net Virtua 120/10

Problem: slow downloads, packet loss, high ping with Xbox Live, many hops to xeas.xboxlive.com compared to globo.com (Brazilian website).

Friend 2: Gabriel

Country: Brazil

City: Palhoça

ISP: Embratel / EBT / Unifique (all dedicated 100/100, he works at an ISP provider)

Problem: slow downloads, packet loss, high ping with Xbox Live, many hops to xeas.xboxlive.com compared to globo.com (Brazilian website).

Friend 3: Fernando

City: São Paulo

ISP: Vivo Fibra (100/50)

Problem: slow downloads, packet loss, high ping with Xbox Live, many hops to xeas.xboxlive.com compared to globo.com (Brazilian website).

All the tests we did with same parameters: like no downloads, wired, torrents, NAT Open, turning off devices and turning on, testing with multiple DNS servers, using VPN trying to cut hops connected direct to Canada, etc. I do not know if the host xeas is
referring to Live but notice how many hops there are in ntwk.msn.net servers.

Xbox live is currently bad for us Brazilians and getting worse. Could you help us? I'm bringing these simple tests that is the will and complaint of many Brazilians about the quality of Xbox Live servers for us ;/

Thanks RUB83R P1G, you're right. As the night went on, the latency got better. It started t around 9 PM EST, and then fixed itself by midnight, which makes perfect sense.

Okay, so I'm experiencing high Latency and slow/low downloads. This problem only happens at night though. The normal settings for my Xbox One is 22 Down, 2.5 Up, and 72 ms Latency. At night it goes to 4-12 Down, it stays at the correct Up, but the latency
goes all the way to 160+ Latency. I have a wired connection. I thought it may be the ethernet cable, so i unplugged it from the X1, and plugged it into my PC. My PC showed very normal Download, Upload, and Latency stats. So now I'm stuck wondering why this
is happening, and only happening during the night. Any help would be appreciated.

With the internet, you do not have a direct connection from your system to Microsoft's server. There are probably a dozen "hops" between the two of you (maybe even more). Each hop is not owned or operated by Microsoft or your ISP. If one or two of those
servers are slow then your ping will be high and your speed slower than expected. This may also be why other devices seem fine with the route they are using and the route for the Xbox server has some slow hops.

If you know the Xbox server IP, you may be able to use a PC to run a tracert and identify the slower hops or servers that are causing the issue. While I have never tried to reach out to one it was good to know where the slow down was at. In some cases
the first hop was the slow down letting me know I had an issue with my router or ISP.

Yes correct depends on how many servers/hops it travels through and ALSO the return path the signal travels... AND how many users are using that server etc at the time.

What i find is that at night more people around you are on the internet e.g: people are back from work. This happens to me as well as at night i can hardly download 200mb but in the mornings i can download 10+GB in 2-3 hours. So if you have to download anything
large do it early in the morning.

the "30 hops" you see are the number of routers that your connection passes through to reach the Xbox server that you're tracing to. a ping of 170ms isn't that poor, but bear in mind that the ping between each hop can mount up and cause 'lag'. There is
nothing you can do about the number of hops between you and the server (also bear in mind that if you're playing against someone who is in America they may be many more than 30 hops away), that's just the way the internet works.

I have a 10Mbps and rarely encounter lag unless I'm playing against gamers from mainland Europe - specifically France, Austria and Germany - this is just something you have to accept - everyone has different speeds, service providers and ping/latency.
