The point is theres no getting around the update if you want to use the online capabilities.

Sonic here, I'm an Xbox Ambassador and fellow gamer.

I completely understand your frustration and I genuinely apologize that you're having to update to continue using your console. Unfortunately, it is the standard to have everyone update their console to be on the same firmware to keep Xbox Live safer for everybody.

If Xbox didn't employ this mandatory-update-system, people could stay on extremely old versions of Xbox which could open up a potential for exploits and there is no way to get past this.

I apologise that this is not the answer you are looking for but as a fellow gamer of 14 Years I completely understand how frustrating updates can be and they always seem to come at the wrong time.

Why am I forced to update my console to continue using it? I'm staying in a hotel with limited daily Wi-Fi usage, and my Xbox has prompted me to either update my console or continue offline. All I want to do is stream video, and obviously I need an internet connection to do so, and I don't want to use 800 MB of my 1 GB data limit on a useless update. I used the console yesterday with no problems, surely this update is not integral to the functioning of the console. So why am I forced to either update or stay offline? This is incredibly frustrating.

This is simply the way its always been even during the Xbox 360 days. If you want to go online youve always had to be on the most up to date version.
