    Actually, being able to do online multi-player gaming is a paid subscription service (Live gold). The are free weekends and even trial periods if you have codes.

    Xbox Live Gold | Xbox

    If you're on an Xbox One and a gold subscriber has the console as their home console, the subscription is shared with all users on that console until the user changes consoles.

    Could that be why you were able to play online without issues?

    • You can’t access Games with Gold for the Xbox 360 with this type of Xbox Live Gold trial subscription.
    • You can’t stack prepaid codes for Xbox Live Gold trial subscriptions from games or console bundles. This means that you can’t start another trial period before your current trial period has finished. However, you can purchase a new paid Xbox Live Gold subscription
      and start the subscription at any time during the trial period.
    • If you don’t currently have a paid Xbox Live Gold subscription, there is no limit to the number of times you can use this type of Xbox Live Gold trial subscription.

    My son downloaded Battlefield 1 and Battlefield 5 and neither will let him log onto Multiplayer.

    If the subscription is not active in your son's account you need a separate live gold subscription if you're not able to set the Xbox as Home Xbox
    You can double check what is shared when you enable home xbox

    Live gold isn't required for free games.
    Technically speaking, battlefield is a paid game . Paid games always required live gold

    The free ones like fall guys, COD Warzone, WoT and similar doesn't have this requirement

    Gold Family Plan expiring July 15th, what are our options?

    I tried to add pre-paid subscription cards and they would not take. I removed members from the family to add the cards and now I can re-add the members to the family gold. Now I have 2 members with 2 years of live on each and the family gold expires in
    a day. No one in support has been able to explain this. No one even mentioned that the family gold pack was going away to me.
