Signing in on the Xbox the same hotmail/outlook email problem?

My buddy can't sign into his Xbox with his old Hotmail address, it only lets him use outlook.com address. He started a new account but it only lets him sign into his old account using outlook. It's like he has two email accounts using the same password
with outlook. How can he fix this problem? I think his two email addresses with Hotmail/outlook with the same password is conflicting him signing into the right account. He's using a new account but xbox only lets him sign into his old account using the outlook
address. He needs to sign in using Hotmail but Xbox won't let him. Any help?

Thanks for your input. A tech guy helped him this morning and it's fixed now. He did have two GT with the same email which didn't help.

Some people still have a Hotmail account as their sign in. The email address does not need to work but that is your account sign in. If you change the address from the Hotmail to the newer outlook,
you may have a serious issue. Go to account.microsoft.com and try to sign in with the Hotmail address, see if you can recover the account there.

Hotmail and Outlook would be the same address. Hotmail transitioned to Outlook quite awhile ago and his email address would have been transitioned to Outlook. But the way you're putting it makes it sound like he created a second GT using the same email
address. Because the Hotmail email address is the Outlook account. Is that correct? Has your friend contacted support at all?
