Should there be a low content post rule?

What I mean by that is the banning of short responses that contribute nothing to the topic of the thread.

A couple of other forums I visit have a rule like this were replies such as those would get you a warning. When a certain number of warnings are reached, you receive a short suspension. Keep on doing it and you eventually get a permanent ban.

This I've seen encourages people to think before they post and to explain themselves a little more when they do so.

I can't help but think such a rule would also help foster a friendlier atmosphere.

Going to post this on the Feedback site as well. Hopefully it is something that Microsoft will consider.

I think it would be a good idea if we had a 'low content post' rule like The Escapist forum.

There if you just post with one or two words, or an exceedingly short reply, you can receive a warning for it. This stops most of the silly threads like this and the stupid '+1' and 'This' replies to posts.

A well thought out response there Juice and Goth but your posts are the perfect example of what I mean.

Why don't you think the rule should be in place. Why do you think a rule to stop what is essentially spam is not a good idea?

I'm not suggesting everyone writes a twelve page essay every time they post but surely what I suggest would help discussion on a discussion forum.

 

To be honest I do not see the point in that. I put short response on alot of the threads here because the majority of the threads do not deserve a large response, for example the huge influx of I didn't get a free game threads or ps4 is better. It all boils
down to the thread and what kind of response it deserves, also lets not make things to serious.

 

It's not short responses in themselves LEX but ones like the examples in my opening post.

They have 'low content' and no attempt made by the posters to contribute.

 

They did contribute even by posting I think, the best posts are normally the ones that make fun of the idiot Tha is posting haha. I could understand if this was a forum for serious matters but its just gaming forum for people that play games. Playing games
is fun not serious, supposedly anyway.

 

Perhaps low content is all they can muster, I am of the opinion that any contribution is better than none.

 

i don't think there would be much benefit from it, willing to bet it will create more of a hostile environment than a friendly one.

i've already seen more than a few people complain about the forums blocking their right to freedom of speech(because they don't actually understand what that really means), i can only imagine how many more threads would pop up daily saying that MS blocks
the First Amendment.

 

Here is the reality of these forums from one who has lurked since the beginning. By most accounts, they are dead, dying, and basically on life support. The majority of the posts in every section are people showing up to complain about something. It wasn't
like that several years ago. People actually had really good discussions. Look at the Xbox Live forum. Most of the posts are "why did I get banned". CoD AW is dropping next week. There's barely any life in that forum. The A/V forum use to be awesome
for us gamers who are A/V enthusiasts. If we instituted a rule where I had to come up with lets say 250 words to post that would be the nail in the coffin for any real discussion. At the end of the day, I question Microsofts commitment to a site where all
people do is come here to complain about something anyway. So NO. Bad idea.

To me they just want a post count, look popular, wait long enough not to tick off most people with their reply. It just wastes forums space.

 

I can see both sides of this coin, but it's also a double-edged sword. On one hand, you get more provocative posts but lose some degree of freedom, so people leave. On the other hand, you get more posts, more people, and more freedom regarding what you can
post, but they are less thought-provoking and often times complete and utter nonsense.

 

Yes. A million times yes. One forum I visit has this exact rule and it works well. People actually discuss the post instead of one liners. Lets you get a better feel for the community you are apart of.
