Is there anything major missing from the Xbox one?

Removable hard drive, better GPU, and it should have atleast included a rechargeable battery pack. Besides that I love it!

The hard drive is internal and not easily removable without opening your console which voids the warranty and Microsoft would not touch it if it's been opened. So it's best not to remove it.

These steps helped me. Have you tried this?:

Remove hard drive and switch on console without the hard drive

If the game(s) are readable without the hard drive, you can re-install the hard drive and the games should work

^That link should probably solve it, as from your description it sounds like a hard drive issue. With the hard drive removed, if the console operates normally then a hard drive replacement would be the recommended solution.

turn off your xbox. remove your hard drive. reinstall your Hard drive turn on your xbox.. everything should be back.
