Should External Hard Drives be switched off?

I recently purchased an external hard drive to add memory space to my Xbox One, and I'm not sure whether I should turn it off when I turn my Xbox off. Currently I think it sits in idle mode when the Xbox is off. I've read that the Xbox constantly looks for
patches when in sleep mode which would require the hard drive to be on, but I've also heard that its not really recommended to have the hard drive on all the time as it can affect the performance, and that there is a setting that turns off the hard drive when
    the Xbox turns off.

In short, is it advisable to have the external hard drive switched on or off when the Xbox is switched off?

    :)

No I have switched the game from the external hard drive to the internal hard drive many times. I have also changed the port many times while the game was on the external hard drive

Should External Hard Drives be switched off?

    Hi arthurgianna,

In my opinion it doesn't matter if the drive is on or off during sleep mode. The I/O on the device will be almost non-existent. With the patching, the Xbox will only install those things to the internal hard drive (this is a guess but i think the space
is pre-reserved). I have my external drive plugged in, and I've never touched it, never had any issues. So in short, I think you're a-ok leaving it plugged in and not worrying about it Should External Hard Drives be switched off? :)

As I understand it system updates will as Hydro skillet says be unstalled on the internal Hd but game updates will be installed to the Hd where the game is installed... I have left the external drives on my two Xbox One consoles on and haven't had any negative
    experiences with that..

  6. I'm more concerned about the loud buzzing and clicking all night keeping me awake. Is Xbox going to fix this or is it just other reason not to use 'instant on'?

How to make external hard drive the main download drive?

okay instant on mode is already off because that's your way to get it to work with external hard drive it's an energy mode right now. And I have to keep the x box on in order for it to download to that hard drive. So you're saying leave the instant on mode
off and keep it on energy mode, and try to download to the internal hard drive? if it works with the external hard drive then it should work with the internal hard drive doing it that way shouldn't it? Because it does work with the external hard drive with
    it on energy mode
