Sharing Account

It sounds like a fine idea to share your account with your children, right? We thought so, anyway. Until my husband suddenly passed away and no one knows the password he used to log in. Making sure the kids didn't know it was his way of controlling how much
and what they played. I didn't play so I didn't really care to know it. Now we can't get into the account at all because we don't know the password to the account and we don't know the password for his email to recover it with either. We could, of course,
spend lots of money we don't have to hire a lawyer to go to the email provider to make them give us access to his email account (maybe...not a guarantee that action would even work and it could take years to resolve). XBox Live has no provision for the death
of the account holder, either. They have no idea how to handle this and will not release the account to us, even with proof of our family relationship and his death. Therefore, all of the children's games, etc. that we have bought over the years are gone.
Poof! We cannot access them at all. Lesson learned: Make sure someone else that you trust has the password to your account. You never know when/if they will need it.

the I'm sorry to hear about your husband. Have you tried password recovery yet? I would hope you know at least the password to his E-mail. Please try to get into his E-mail, then attempt to reset the password on his account. Hopefully everything works out.

No, we do not know his password to his email account. If we did, this wouldn't be such an issue. We each had our own email accounts. I never cared to know his password and he never cared to know mine. We used them for both personal and business use. It wasn't
a big deal to us because we never felt the need to mingle our accounts or to check up on each other for any reason. The only way to get into his email account now is to go through the courts, which is a very long and prohibitively expensive action to take.
Since XBox Live does not take proof of his death and our family relationship into account (nearly every other company we have dealt with does do that, btw) that leaves us totally out of luck with this issue.

 

Unfortunately this is a very unusual issue as most people have at last one other who knows their passwords. You could try skipping the LIVE portion of the account and go straight to A: Microsoft Support outside Xbox with conclusive proof and proof that legal
issues will not occur. B: The Email Provider by providing conclusive proof that the account holder is deceased and that you are married to him, therefore making it your property.

Alternatively, you may just have to start again, which would be a shame.

 

I'm really sorry about the whole situation. Unfortunately I don't believe there any other legal ways to retrieve the password.
