setting xbox series s to 120 hz (please help)

my friend recently got an xbox series s and it wont go to 120 hz. he has the aw2518h monitor, which can go up to 240 hz and should work with hdmi 1.4 on 120 hz (there are videos of people getting 120 hz on his monitor). the refresh rate tab doesnt show up unless he does video fidelity display override to hdmi thing, and when he selects 120 hz his says no signal. after 20 seconds it goes back to 60 hz. we are doing this on 1080p by the way. can anyone help?

Can my Xbox series s run a 1080p 165hz monitor?

Hello, David R. I'm Arturo, and I'll be glad to provide assistance with your inquiry today.

Xbox Series X and S consoles support a maximum frequency of 120 Hz. Therefore, you will not able to set or see 60 or 120 Hz.

Besides that, it is important to clarify that you need to check if the monitor you want to get supports 120 Hz via the HDMI port, most monitors support 120 Hz and above via Display Port only.

You can check if your monitor supports 120 Hz via HDMI, if the timing is exactly 120 Hz and not (for example) 119.99 Hz and more by checking the manual or contacting the manufacturer.

I hope you find this answer helpful to your inquiry.

    Kind regards,

    Arturo.

Black screen after manual override of 120HZ

Hi LIAMSHARMAN! My name is Ricardo an independent advisor ready to help you with this situation!

If you have an Xbox Series S console, or if your TV doesn’t support HDMI 2.1, you can still enable 120 Hz gaming at a lower resolution. To do this, set your Refresh rate on the TV & display options screen to 120 Hz. If your resolution was previously set to 4K, the console will automatically adjust the resolution to support the 120 Hz refresh rate. Otherwise, select a resolution from the available options.

If you own an Xbox Series S and wish to game in 4K@120Hz, you’ll need to acquire a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
