Setting up family account with child email?

Hi all,

I want to allow my 7 year old son limited access to our XBox One X so that he can play Minecraft.

It's not obvious using the XBox itself but I found an article on how to set up a family account.

However, when I try to add him, I'm told I need to specify an email account for him. Needless to say, I neither (a) want my 7 year old having an email address not (b) want the hassle of having to set up one that I need to maintain and whose details I will probably forget.

Is there _no way_ to use this functionality without giving young children email addresses?

Hi all,

I ended up setting up a child account for him with a new email. I'm getting problems though when I try to access the XBox settings. (See below)

When I access the settings on Chrome, I can see the following setting; however, he still cannot add friends in Minecraft. Does anyone know other settings that override this?

There's a link:

with the URL:

When I click on that, it resolves to:

https://account.xbox.com/en-ie/settings

At this point I get the error:

The page isn’t redirecting properly

An error occurred during a connection to account.xbox.com.

This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept cookies.

I'm on Firefox 89.0 and accepting cookies, what else can the problem be?

You can restrict the email too, you dont have to make him use the email, you can keep it hidden from him so he can play minecraft.

my assumption is, that if the Xbox Live Account is used, the Microsoft Account it is based on (Hotmail/OutLook etc) is also seen as used, which would mean that the account is seen as active.

But a Hotmail email account wouldn't be seen as active unless you physically logged into the email account to check messages?...unless using the Microsoft account automatically logs you into your Hotmail account..but then you'd still need to physically open the Hotmail email (through whatever medium is used to access messages) to show the system it is active I would have thought

Yes but don't Hotmail accounts expire if you don't log into them occasionally?

Apparently they are deleted if they are inactive for 365 days (at least that's what I just read...may or may not be accurate). All you need to do is remember to login once a year

An alternative would be something like Gmail....though what happens with inactive accounts is not certain...some reports that they get deleted after 2 years, some never.
