  1. Setting Up a Family Account for a Child makes Gold less valuable

This is more of a complaint because I do not see, nor can I find, a method to fix the issues I'm having with using my son's account setup under a Family.

Background - 10 year old Son gets Xbox One; I setup the system so that he has his own account but under my control (you know, the proper way a parent should). He gets Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Gift Cards for Christmas...

Here are the mistakes that we made...

Applied the Xbox Live Gold and the Xbox Gift Cards to his child account

    Why is this a mistake...

    First - If your child wants to purchase an Xbox 360 backwards compatible game from the Live system using his gift card, and you do not have a 360, then you can't buy it. It doesn't matter if your parent account is on the system and you're sitting right there;
you do not have the ability to sign in and authorize the purchase. Even if you change the settings to allow purchasing anything they want, they cannot purchase a backwards compatible 360 game. It must be purchased from a 360 under their account... I think
if I were to purchase it under my adult parent account, then it would work but I haven't tried it.

Don't try to change the settings or age for the child account either... it won't work.

Second - The free gold games for the next three weeks are 2 Rated M games and an Xbox 360 backwards compatible E10+ game. So, the Rated M games are out for my 10 year old... and the E10+ can't be purchased due to the same damn problem as the game he wants
    to buy.

Oh, but share the Xbox Live Gold on that machine, maybe that will let the parent install the game... nope! The parent account does not have access to the Gold games or deals...

The lesson learned here... do not expect Microsoft to provide any reasonable options that provide security for your child and allow you to use the services and network that you "must" buy too. Setup the account as a stand alone adult account and be done
with it. Give in to the suck that you're bound to receive.

    :)

"Setup the account as a stand alone adult account and be done with it. Give in to the suck that you're bound to receive."

That's the conclusion I'm arriving at, too. The Microsoft/Xbox
parental controls user experience SUCKS. It's a shame how it's not a priority for Microsoft because it's not a profit center for them.

Was your account originally set up as a child account, or part of a family gold account?

Moving from Xbox 360 to Xbox One and Family Sharing

As the family sharing option on the Xbox one is a little bit different to the option on the 360 it is definitely recommended the way you describe it. Set up the adult account and get it a gold subscription. Then set up the child account(s) and add them
to the family and all the family associated accounts are able to use the gold subscription as well as all the digital purchases of the parent/adult account. And of course you can also add another parent/adult account, too.

Only getting a gold subscription for the child account only works for the specific child account and will not be valid for the adult or other family associated accounts.

Mature Game ads shown on my child account

The 4 year old has an account because their guardian set one up for them. That's their right to do so. For the OP one thing you can try is to make sure you have the content set for family on the child's account. If you have a family gold membership it is
pretty easy to check. If not you just need to log into that account and double check the privacy and online settings.
