Having worked the retail end, I'll give you my spin. Retail stores have issues with space (even warehouse retailers like Amazon only have so much room), so they will sometimes price aggressively in order to move volume. Digital copies take no inventory
space. They'll try to leave prices maxed as high as possible, as long as possible, in order to max the revenue. In bricks and mortar stores there has always been pressure to move a product that isn't selling well, because it takes up space. Thus the lower
pricing. If you support digital, be prepared to pay higher prices for a longer period of time. It's just the nature of the model.

Your comments about brick and mortar stores moving physical inventory makes perfect sense but your take on digital doesn't explain why it doesn't occur anywhere but on the consoles.

Everywhere else you see price drops on items that aren't selling (books for Kindle, music, PC games etc). It's unique to the console.

 

Not really,in my country there are no price drop for books.Books are protected by a law,same prices for everybody, retailers are just allowed to do a -5% discount and there are twice a year a national sales (for different kind of products)....

Of course,there is a market for used books (but that's another story).

I don't know if digital books are also under this law,also most digital markets are coming from outside (maybe they can do whatever they want).

Lifetime of a none selling book at major retailers,3 weeks,after that books are send back to publishers and are destroyed....No price drop.

Seems to be cheaper to destroy instead of dropping price.

 

I don't think Microsoft (and/or publishers) are going to pay a staff (many people) to continually monitor the following: large and small B & M stores in every country, state/province, region, and city. Amazon and other large online retailers, ebay, craigslist,
etc. The cost of watching prices of physical (disc) games and constantly adjusting their digital price to match (or even undercut) is just not worth it. Walk in retailers have a lot more flexibility in their pricing as there are many different reasons they
could slash prices (shipping, wharehouse, and shelf space, ability to liquidate, at a loss, reduce cost to drive up foot traffic, etc.)
