  1. Seriously?

I am not one much to complain all that often. So I do enjoy buying digital games here and there, the main reason is that it saves me a trip to a store and also if the store doesn't have it game in stock it's a waste of a trip.

So today I wanted to buy Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition because I really enjoyed the game on 360.. and seeing as that I don't have my 360 I thought I'd double-dip into the game. So when I did a search for it on MS Store I saw it priced at: $49.99. I found
that price to be quite high. So I looked at Best Buy Canada and NEW copy of the game is $27.97. I also check out EB Games (aka GameStop) and a new copy of the game is $34.99.

I am just wondering why MS Store is selling the game at the price when it was new? Well other stores are selling it for a lot less?

    :)

    Seriously?

As with any product a store is free to set its own prices based on what they think they can get Microsoft/ developers (not sure which sets digital price) obviously think they can get more than the stores do

Is MS responsible for the prices or the publishers/developers?

    Hey Raging.

This question was asked when the digital marketplace first opened up ages ago.

Nobody who's addressed it works for Microsoft so we can only offer our best guesses.

The most logical answer I've heard so far would have to be "If Microsoft Undersold physical shops in the digital store, no one would shop there and they would shut".

This would have the potential to seriously harm Microsoft's console and peripheral sales though.

Sure, more and more people are happy to try out a "digital edition" of a game if they get a good deal... but not so many are keen to get something like an expensive console from an online faceless retailer.

So most people believe that prices are high so they don't undermine your local shop's prices.

    Seems sensible enough to me.

  7. Wanted to share this to see what people have to say.

I use Gamefly. I've been renting ESO. I just noticed that there is a sale on the digital version through the MS store. $40.19

I looked around (not much, but I checked Amazon and Gamestop's website).

    Gamestop has it for $39.99

Found it on Amazon for $45.95

I can 'keep it' via Gamefly for $44.99 and have a $5 discount for being a member.

With the exception of the MS store version being digital, all of these other copies are physical.

These were all new copies, not used prices.

So, admittedly I didn't hunt very hard for the lowest prices, but it seems to me that waiting for a digital copy to go on sale via publisher's sale, or on the MS store can work out with a fair price? Thoughts?

    Seriously?

Digital distribution prices are set by an agreement between the distributor, developers and publisher (if applicable).

The distributor (MS, Sony, Valve) gets a cut of the sale so the higher the price the more money they get. An argument could be made that lowering the price would generate more sales and increase the overall profit but that doesn't seem to make a difference
    to MS.

The majority of Microsoft's income comes from sources other than digital distribution cuts so they may simply not be as concerned about crunching the numbers as Steam and Sony.

Without any competition if you choose to go digital then you'll pay what they are asking.

Hence my previous post. I prefer digital for the convenience aspect... but there's no way I will pay an obnoxious difference just for that aspect. The deal I'm considering seems
fair enough. Just curious how others see it.

    @Blue

In the case your looking at with ESO the price difference isn't worth going physical when the digital is just pennies more and you get the added convenience.

Patience may actually be your best financial choice with ESO, shelve it and wait for F2P.

With ESO I don't think it'll ever truly be free to play as in removing purchase price but there is no subscription fee

  13. Seriously?

The buss model for developers/MS/Sony was that rental and used would be regulated out of bussiness. That happened with Blockbuster etc, but when it came to games. The consumer realized what was happening and threw a monkey in the works.

If that hadn't of happened, then you'd be paying a lot higher for your games with the only way of getting a game being Digital DL, and apart from the occasional sale, at full retail. Even for games 2 plus years old.

Before current gen was released. That was the talk around the forums and the net for some time.

So even though the buss model didn't hold this time around. It's still in place.

Take for example Sniper v2 for the 360. Old game, and you can pick it up New with 5 DLC for 20 bucks most anywhere. But on demand its at least twice that price, with DLC costing extra.

Thus in my view. The buss model, like an accident. Is still in place awaiting a time to happen.

MMO staff/servers are expensive. The game didn't sell well and reviewed horribly on the PC and mediocre reviews on the console. Only way they keep the servers up is income and free to play with micros is the current way all but about two MMO's do it.

  15. Yeah, price fluctuate everywhere, but i truly think that digital versions should always be cheaper by roughly 25-35% due to IT'S digital form or just DATA transfer....which means if for some reason u can't connect to LIVE! ur *** and are unable to play.
Not to mention if something was to happen to MICRO then ur games are lost for good.

Better to always buy the physical copy. Then if there is fault it rests plainly on you the owner.

The prices are determined by many factors and the length of time on the market obviously is one of them. New games should; as physical copies if from AA developers.should be full price in my opinion.
