  1. Serious External Hard Drive Issues for Xbox One

I am having the same problem with a Toshiba canvio desktop 2TB EHDD with it's own power supply and plugged into the back of the cosole. It was working fine for about 2 months and then today it gave problems, so now I have put another Toshiba canvio portable
2TB EHDD the does NOT have a power supply. I have plugged into the side port on the xbone . I have downloaded and playing minecraft while it is downloading forza horizon 2 demo.

Hope this helps anyone out (and hopefully fixed my problem too).

    :)

Serious External Hard Drive Issues for Xbox One (SOLVED)

i believe i have the fix for you!!

    1. make sure your HDD have low Amperage!!

FOUND ON GOOGLE!! Next up is power, and by that I mean the amperage that can be delivered via the port to charge your device. USB 3.0 provides up to 900mA. USB 2.0 can only provide 500mA.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Meaning my firsst drive @ 1.1A = 1100 Ma!!! It couldnt power the drive properly!!!!!

    so i switched to a hitachi 320 GB 7200 Rpm @ 5V 800Ma

Look at photo to better understand

mine has its own power supply and is the one major nelson said was tested with the xbox one yet it doesnt matter which port i use its still taking years to update a game and finish it off for example.last night i left black flag / watch dogs /sniper elite
3 all to update (there installed and played fine) woke up this morning and again black flag is at 100% but wont finish off and when you start the game single player is still loading up yet the other 2 games are still at 0% as the xbox wont move over to the
next update ,if i manually change which is installing that game doesn the same gets to 100% and stops again . it seems to me certain games run fine on external and some wont

Guys, it seems to be a HARD DRIVE/USB 3.0 interface issue. For one thing, I have noticed that when I need to access to my my 2TB app and games drive, it will first have to spin up, leaving a long gap of time when it is not available. If this happens in a
game, I would imagine that it would cause a failure. Perhaps it is something as simple as the hard drive spins down after a certain amount of time inactive. The other is that I have a 3TB Seagate 3.5 inch drive in a Rosewill USB 3.0 enclosure for movies and
TV shows. About 4% of the movies either do not work or worse hang up the Media Player Preview while either trying to play the movie or EVEN worse, just trying to display the thumbnail. NOTHING WRONG WITH THE MOVIES. If I copy the movies onto a USB thumb drive,
It displays the thumbnail and works fine.

If you get desperate enough, get a large USB 3.0 thumb drive and use that until MS can figure out either how to get Hard drives to work properly or gives us a list of compatible hard drives/ enclosures.

PS I tried turning off the instant on to see if the long boot up causes the hard drive to automatically spin up. No luck. Something to try tho.

  9. Having the same issue with WD MyBook 2TB. Worked fine for a while then the 'External Storage Ready' notifications started, it will shut down any installed games/apps if in use when it happens. I formatted again, which was a hassle as I had to reinstall everything,
however it seemed to work, but only for a while as it has begun happening again. Quite annoying. I've moved it from the rear port to the side one but the problem still occurs. Any advice or tips anyone has would be amazing. I've reached out to Xbox Support,
so will update if I hear anything.

  10. My xbox doesn't even ask to format it, just says that my external media drive is ready for use. When looking into the device solection it shows the correct size and that it will work for pictures, music, and video. Only thing it gives me for an option
is to look at the media on the drive were it continues to tell me that I must have permision to access. Been struggling to get this working as I am sure many like myself are pretty fustrated with microsoft and there choice in hdd size that fits only a hand
full of games. Any Ideas would be awesome.. Thanks

  11. I have a Toshiba canvio desktop 3TB and everything I had on it worked just fine until I downloaded the newest update. I get the same issue many of you get, games will crash and I get the "external device is Ready" message. I've tried reformatting it, changing
out the USB cable, and power cycling my Xbox. The only thing that seemed to work for a little bit was the power cycling oddly enough. It seems quite a few people, including myself, only started experiencing problems when an update game into play. Could that
    be a factor?

My External HD only works on the USB port located at XBOX's left side. The back ports are slow and they work just for a few minutes b4 I get the message "External Storage Ready". This is very frustrating... Maybe I will buy an USB Hub. It shouldn't be any
difference between the ports, but XBOX has crazy behaviors, so who knows? Serious External Hard Drive Issues for Xbox One :p

Since the update I can no longer detect my external hard disk. I spoke to microsoft support who did try just about everything to resolve the issue. After 3 hours of tinkering it was decided my xbox was faulty and needs replacing.

Same issues with external HDD not being recognized by my XBone. I am using a Seagate Expansion 3TB USB 3.0. Works fine on PC. After watching YouTube videos on how to connect to the One, my console does not offer the option to format. After chatting with
Microsoft XBone support team, we were able to get the drive to be read by the One by swapping out the cable that came with the drive for a USB 3.0 direct connect cable but it still would not format the drive for use with the One. Anyone know how to fix? I
have tweeted this to Major Nelson (Larry Hryb) and Xbox Support. Both of my friends are having the same issue with different manufacturers of HDD (one is using a WD 1 TB and the other had a Toshiba 2 TB).
