Series X randomly shutting down while gaming.

I've just gotten my Series X a little over a month ago. If it's relevant, my console was manufactured in January of 2021, since I know there were some defective units back between August and November of 2020.

The issue is basically the title. I'll be in the middle of a game and the console will completely shut down on me. The first time it happened (maybe 2 weeks ago) I was confused but assumed the console just crashed and it was no big deal, but then it happened again about 20 minutes later. And then again in 15 minutes. Now the console doesn't shut down that often all the time, but 3 times in less than 45 minutes would concern anyone.

2 weeks later and its either shut down on me once all day or shuts down literally once every hour or so. It seems to happen more often in intense games, but I'm hoping its not a hardware issue. It's also not overheating because if I'm not mistaken there's a message that's shown when the console overheats, and I'm not getting that. The console is standing in a literal open space with no obstruction of anything anywhere. It can breathe better than I can.

I've tried:

- Taking the console off my UPS backup battery and surge protector
- Taking the console off a power strip and connecting it directly to the wall socket
- A completely different outlet on it's own breaker in my house to rule out home electrical problems
- Reinstalling the titles it crashed on (i thought it could've been a borked install, twas not)

I'm going to try:

- System reset (keeping content)
- Trying the Omega or Delta preview builds
- Manual update OS (I'm hoping it's more of a flash than an update)
- Punching it exactly twice
- Numerous Satanic rituals
- whatever you guys suggest (literally anything, even new rituals lmao)
and last but not least:
- System reset (NOT keeping content), last resort because who the hell wants to wait to redownload a little under 1TB of GamePass goodness

I hope these work because I really don't want to have to go through the warranty hassle of shipping my console back, only to get sent a refurbished unit with enough scuffs and scratches to convince a veteran it's survived 3 tours in Afghanistan. Especially not when my console barely has fingerprints. I've only had that experience once with my younger brother's Xbox 360 S, but I've heard things, and that's not a chance I'm exactly willing to take considering I've JUST spent the $500 for a new console and want a NEW unit. Open-box was an option when I bought it, I chose new for a reason.

Hi there. Sorry to hear u have the same problem. My console was made in jan 21. I’ve heard about possible bad batches in the first few months but I don’t think that’s the case. I think it’s just random bad chips. My console has gotten worse with even more games shutting it down. This seems to have coincided with the hot weather we have here so I’m convinced it’s overheating. Even tho I’ve never had an error message. So I still have the problems and I’ve tried every fix possible. I am now sending it back. I’ll post how that goes. I recommend you do the same

What manufacturing date do your consoles have? My xbox is from 09/22/2020.

Did a repair solve the problem for you?

Was the console replaced or repaired?

Does the new console have a different manufacturing date?

If it’s a game you’d be interested in, there’s this free to play WWII combat sim called Enlisted. I’ve been playing it basically nonstop since I tried it 2 days ago. And don’t worry, the combat or menus aren’t as complex as they seem. Even with raytracing on in quality mode I actually haven’t had the system shut down on me once. I wonder if you’ll have the same experience. This game would definitely strain the console.

All I’ve found as a fix is to send it back to be replaced. But again like u that’s a road I don’t want to go down. And what’s worse is I live in the uk and there doesn’t seem to b anyway secure way to return it to Microsoft via ups in this country. So I’m **** either way

Try checking your alerts and system notifications next time it does that? it might be telling you something right before or after it happens, then your xbox could not be notifying you.

Just happened now after resetting (and keeping content) while playing FH4 (got to driving about 100ft from my house before the shutdown). There were no notifications shown before the shutdown or after I restarted it. I even checked old notifications to see if there was anything.

ALso check your system and app preferences to make sure you have them turned on and everything.

Checked, they're on. Though I'd hope something as critical as this would push past any user settings lol

Do you keep your console set to Instant on, or energy saving? try changing that option to whatever one you dont currently use and see if that helps anything.

I have it on instant on. I'll give it a shot but I honestly don't think that could be the issue. I mean it isn't when I turn the console on but when I'm playing something.

My next suggestion would be to let your console run idle on the guide, without any app or game running, and see what it does after a few hours. Then you might be able to determine if its a general console issue or just an issue while running games/apps.

Like I said, it only happens while playing games. It's never happened in an app or while idling. To be fair though, I spend way more time in games than I do apps or idle, so there's much less opportunity for it to happen.
