Series x keeps turning usb hard drive on and off multiple times an hour even with an...

I've had this xbox for months with this setup and haven't noticed this issue until the new insiders update a few weeks ago.

I understand that this is a problem under normal operation cause the xbox always supplies power to the usb ports(which honestly is stupid),but I got tired of my external hard drive running constantly even when my xbox was off.so I went out and picked up a tricklerstar advanced power strip that has ports that get their power turned off when the switching device is turned off.

So i have the xbox as the switching device so the power strip Physically kills power to the hard drive when the xbox is off.and it was working great for a few months until the new update.

It seems multiple times an hour no matter if it is in eco mode, Energy saving mode,or even in full shut down mode the xbox internally wakes up to "phone home" which trips the power strip's relay which then allows the hard drive to turn on as it is now receiving both wall and USB power.

I know this is not a power strip issue as the relay click happens, then the hard drive turns on,spins up for Approximately 5 minutes, then the hard drive spins down and shuts off( just as it does under normal operation),,then the relay will click afterwards meaning it has killed power to the hard drive. If something like wifi or some internal fault with the power strip was causing the relay to trip the hard drive wouldn't have time nor get the command to do its shut down.

Last week this issue was only present in the quick shut down modes eco and power saving, but if I did a full shut down the hard drive would stay off.now it doesn't matter what mode I am in,the xbox continues to trip the power strip when it has absolutely no business doing so..

Xbox Series X eternal hard drive

    Hi,

If your game is now a Series X optimised title, it can no longer be played off an external hard drive. It must be moved to either the internal storage or an optional expansion card.

External USB hard drives are too slow to play Series X optimised games. None Series X games will still run from your external drive. The internal storage in the Series X is a fast NVME SSD. These drives are several times faster than mechanical hard drives.

    External hard drive not working

    Hi,

External hard drives are not fast enough for Xbox Series X|S titles. Unfortunately you can't play these games off slow USB external hard drives. They need either be installed internally or to an optional Xbox Series X|S Expansion card.

Why can I not install game pass games on the USB external hard drive?

Series S/X games cannot be played from a hard drive connected via USB. Series S/X games can only be played from the internal drive or the official expansion cards that attach directly in the back of the console. Again, no USB connected drives can play Series S/X games.

Xbox series X|S alternative high speed storage expansion

    Hi,

No, sorry it won't work. The USB ports on the Series X|S are USB 3.1 which have a maximum speed of 500MB/s. This means, no matter what drive you buy, no matter what speed it's rated at, you're stuck at the max speed of the USB port.

The only drives that can be used for Series X|S games are either the internal or the storage expansion card.

I have the Expansion card for my Series X. I also have an external 2TB USB SSD in an enclosure. I can only use the external SSD for Xbox One games. They do load a lot faster than a mechanical hard drive, but I can't play my Series X games off it.

Is my Xbox one X faulty??

Nope. If i hold the button to shut it down the only way to keep it off is to unplug the hard drive. Its 100% the hard drive causing this issue. But the one i had before which was also wall powered did not cause this issue.

Anyone here use a hard drive plugged into the back usb ports usb or wall powered?

I just turned my xbox on while in instant on mode and it never shut down. So it doesnt seem to do it all the time.
