Series x account retrieval = always try again later

Hi

Bought the series X earlier today. Starts up fine but as soon as I put in my account password I get asked to try again in a while. This has now been taking place for 3 hours - many times the same answer. Two seconds after password input there is always a
blink then rotating wheel for a minute or so then the same try again later answer.

I changed the password and my Xbox one signs in straight away. Series X always the same message. Tried unplugging internet etc. I get exactly the same message with my son's account.

Is this a hardware issue?

Appreciate anyone who has an idea or can point me in the right direction to read about the issue as I cannot speak to anyone from Microsoft support. I just get virtual help which does not deal with this.

Just in case anyone has the same problem. It kept showing the same message above for another few hours. I tried an old disc that I figured would need an update. This seemed to immediately get things moving and within a few minutes I was automatically signed
in.

I guess accessing live for the update got everything else moving and broke whatever problem loop there was.
