Series S cuts to black when switching to 120hz

Hi so I have just gotten the series S and thought I’d finally be able to utilise my 144hz monitor with the 120fps option.

In my Xbox settings I am attempting to change to 120hz and it will turn my monitor off/on/off/on and then just go back to the Xbox screen stating I’m still on 60hz.

I have the ‘BenQ ZOWIE XL2430 24 Inch 144 Hz e-Sports Gaming Monitor’

I’ve literally tried looking online for hours and cannot find anything, some places say I need to change the monitor to 144hz via my windows PC settings which I can’t see how that’s an option as surely you don’t need an external bit of equipment to use the boasted Fps upgrade on the new Xbox.

I am using the Xbox’s 2.1 HDMI cable in HDMI 2 port.

Highly annoying as I feel I’ve just brought an old Xbox for the price of the next gen.

    :)

So really my best bet is getting a new monitor and ensuring it either has 2.0 HDMI ports or the VRR sync? Or is that only something that’d be useful for PC gaming? Baring in mind I shall be getting a highend gaming PC at some point in the near future
HDMI 2.1 is the new standard for high refresh displays. While you can get 120Hz to work on some HDMI 2.0 monitors, these are older displays and many have bandwidth limitations due to the older standard. All high end monitors come with high bandwidth DP connectors for high refresh rates on PC, so no need to worry about that.

It depends on how much you want to spend. What's your budget?

Two weeks ago I replaced my 27LG 1440P monitor for a Gigabyte M32U 4K Monitor. It was a little pricy, about £700 GBP. It supports 4K @120Hz with VRR over HDMI 2.1. I use it on my Series X and my gaming PC. It's a fantastic monitor, it even has built in speakers.

Right so what can I do to counter that as the Xbox doesn’t have the DP port? Hella annoying to spend £300 on a monitor and it not just be simple

my sons 1080p msi 27" monitor supports freesync and 144hz over hdmi, it also supports 120hz for ps5 and xbox series consoles too. this has hdmi 1.4. Also tested.

actually a lot of monitors do support 120 and 144 via hdmi, mine does, but the edid (registery in the monitor) has to have dead on 120hz, most monitors sit a few 0. hz under or above, also the monitor has to list 120hz as an option in the edid for xbox to use it, pc's can set custom hz regardless of what the monitor edid states, but xbox cannot.
